NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:22 Therefore, [unknown] tongues are [meant] for a [supernatural] sign, not to believers but to unbelievers [who might be receptive]; while prophecy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people] is not for unbelievers but for believers. |
Bible Question:
Have we been resisting the holy spirit? Hi leolipwee, I have noticed that you speak of the Holy Spirit as "it" occasionally. When I speak of "it" I speak of the holy spirit for it is then thought of as a gift, a promise, a power that we have from God. Do you see what I mean and do you agree? I believe that there is the third Person of the Trinity and there is the holy spirit that is the gift that we have been given and with which we can be filled. For instance Acts 1:8, "...but you shall receive power [baptized with the holy spirit, verse 5] when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be (My) witnesses..." I believe that the Spirit descended upon Jesus in Matthew 3:16 and Mark 1:10. But He is a Person who baptized in the holy spirit rather than in water. It is because of the witness of the Spirit that we know Jesus as God. We know Him as the Beloved Son. I believe that we are filled with the holy spirit [sic] in all of the occurances in the Scriptures. Go through the 8-11 times that the filling occurs and see if a Person is spoken of. So I believe that we are filled with the holy spirit, or at least should be as Christians, and capable of speaking boldly the word of the Lord. For it is not we who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit. See Mark 13:11 and Luke 12:12, "for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say." When I talk about the holy spirit it is a new way to "not look at God", in a sense. Just as I want people to look at the Man instead of the man, Jesus Christ; I want you to consider also looking at the holy spirit instead of the Holy Spirit in some portions of Scripture. I would make holy spirit lower case in all the occurances of being filled. Acts 2:4; 4:8; 4:31; 9:17; 13:9; Luke 1:15; 1:41; l:67. I would appreciate anyone's comments. Could it be that we have been resisting the holy spirit? Acts 7:51, "You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the *Holy *Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did." From the heart, Ray |
Bible Answer: yes, i believe that the Holy Spirit is the gift, the promise, and the power from GOD. But in my study, i found that the Holy Spirit is not only a witness to GOD, it gives the person personal edification, the power to speak in tongues, to have knowledge, teachings, revelations, as well as prophesies. as for Acts 1:8, it is true that it is mentioned they recieved power, but what? in this chapter, we have just seen the power of speaking in tongues when they were filled with the Holy Spirit so that they might be a witness and believe in the preaching of the Gospel. as for the 8-11 times the filling occurs, can you point it out to me so that i can make a study? for your comments on that '...When I talk about the holy spirit it is a new way to "not look at God", in a sense...' i'll explain why that is so for me. i never saw GOD the same way a long time ago (when i wasn't saved yet) even though i have been reading the Bible, yearning to find truths. when i was saved, and recieved the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit opened my eyes to the Bible, enabling me to find JESUS in many OT books in the Bible where His name wan't mentioned at all. As i found out later, the reason why even though i have read them and not understood and seen, was that simply the Holy Spirit have yet revealed the mysteries to me. also, i am not too sure why would there be the need to put the "Holy Spirit" as the "holy spirit", that is to put it down. The Holy Spirit in the verses that you have pointed out, has almost always gave the people the power to speak in tongues, to have knowledge, teachings, revelations, as well as prophesies (which is strengthen in 1 Corinthian 14). But even as all that are in this forum, and discussing about the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit IS working in us, spurring us to the truth about JESUS and our FATHER GOD. I don't think we can resist the Holy Spirit once we are saved because the Holy Spirit was sent to us from out FATHER GOD for a purpose (John 16:7-15). moreover, what GOD had cleansed and done, we are not to call it dirty and uncommon. Through one man's (Adam) sin, the world fell, and through one man's (JESUS) obedience, the world (for those accepted JESUS as their saviour) rose in victory. i hear your heart, and i pray that my young walk with JESUS have helped you.
