NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:22 Therefore, [unknown] tongues are [meant] for a [supernatural] sign, not to believers but to unbelievers [who might be receptive]; while prophecy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people] is not for unbelievers but for believers. |
Subject: Have we been resisting the holy spirit? |
Bible Note: Greetings Leolipwee! In both John 16:13-14 and Eph. 1:14, the Holy Spirit is referred to with the masculine pronoun 'He'. Further, as the third Person of the Godhead, He is very much a Person, not just a power or force. As such, in Scripture, He: 1) Can be grieved - Is. 63:10. 2) Speaks - Mk. 13:11. 3) Teaches - Lk. 12:12. 4) Instructs - Acts 1:2. 5) Can be lied to - Acts 5:3. 6) Is a witness - Acts 5:32. 7) Can be resisted - Acts 7:51. 8) Strenghens and Encourages - Acts 9:31. 9) Makes decisions - Acts 15:28. 10) Restricts - Acts 16:6. 11) Warns - Acts 20:23. 12) Appoints overseers - Acts 20:28. 13) Sanctifies - Rom. 15:16. 14) Protects - 2 Tim. 1:14. 15) Reveals - Heb. 9:8. 16) Testifies - Heb. 10:15. 17) Inspires Scripture - 2 Pet. 1:21. All of these are things which can only be done by a Person, not just a force or power. Scripture is very clear that the Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity. I hope this helps!
