NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:22 Therefore, [unknown] tongues are [meant] for a [supernatural] sign, not to believers but to unbelievers [who might be receptive]; while prophecy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people] is not for unbelievers but for believers. |

Bible Note: May I, without pressing for familiarity, call you leo? :-)I believe you are on a safe track with your explanation regarding tongues. I've said before that English-speaking peoples might well have been spared a great deal of confusion had the translators used the word 'languages' instead of 'tongues', because 'languages' better conveys the sense of what is meant in the passages where 'tongues' is used. The phrase 'speaking in tongues' seems to have an inherent sense of esoterica and mysticism, whereas 'speaking in languages' does not and conveys more nearly to the reader of English the meaning of the Greek. As for the expression 'being in the spirit' (or Spirit?), I'm not quite sure what meaning is placed on that by the questioner. John used the expression in Revelation, but his meaning and the meaning attached to it by modern Pentecostals may or may not be the same. I simply don't know. My emphasis has been directed more to the Spirit's indwelling in me as a regenerate believer, not to my being 'in the Spirit' -- whatever that means. --Hank |
