Scott, One thing that we have not touched upon that may help in our understanding of 2 Peter 3:8 is the fact that Peter is speaking about God's perspective of time in 2 Peter 3:8, not man's perspective. However, I believe that God created the world in six literal earth days so that we, in our limited perspective of time, could understand that He is the Source of creation. God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day for OUR good - so that we could establish a system of months, days, and years (time). However, God is not bound to the earth and He is not bound whatsoever by time, since He is the one who put time into motion. In this way, we can understand 2 Peter 3:8, in saying that God could view the total time that has elapsed since creation until today (or until the end of time for that matter) as one single day. But according to our perspective, many thousands of years has elapsed! I believe that the Lord was speaking with man's perspective in mind when He spoke to Adam in Genesis 2:17. We must not forget what the Lord has told us in Isaiah 55:8-9.. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." (RSV) I believe that Isaiah 55:8-9 was spoken with the same perspective in mind as was 2 Peter 3:8. We must not forget that Peter quoted Isaiah from time to time (1 Peter 1:24, 2:6,8). Hi Makarios, Thank you for the Scripture references in your last paragraph. It speaks to the light of His word. Isaiah 55:11, "So shall My/ word be which goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what (I) desire." 1Peter 1:25, "'But the word of the Lord/ abides forever.' And this is the word which was preached to you." 1Peter 2:9, "But you are a CHOSEN RACE, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR GOD'S OWN POSSESSION, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF (GOD); you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY." Acts 26:23, "that the Christ/ was to suffer, and that by reason of His resurrection from the dead He should be the first to proclaim light both to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles." Acts 1:4, "And gathering them together, He/ commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the *promise of the Father, "Which," He said, "you heard of from (Me); for John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the *holy *spirit not many days from now." God gives us light in His word and He was the first to proclaim His marvelous light. We have to go forth in a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. And with the hope of His calling and His inheritance in the saints. Ephesians 1:18. From the heart, Ray |
