1 | A FALSE TEACHING? Yes / No | Matt 8:5 | John Reformed | 93142
Dear LDS, I believe you are reading into the parable your own meaning. Matt 17:19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not drive it out?" Matt 17:20 And He *said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. Notice that Jesus said "...if you have faith the size of a mustard seed...". He did not say if you have faith "like" a mustard seed. John Reformed |

Keep in mind that I'm not trying to defeat you or your argument in this discussion. I am more concerned with what the Word of God has to say about it. If you are in this discussion simply to try to have a nit-picking philosophical argument, then I will take my leave of you. However, if you are truly looking for what the Word says, then I will gladly go with you on this journey. I realize that you are going from the NASB in your understanding of this scripture, but perhaps you should take a look at the Amplified translation of this scripture. He said to them, Because of the littleness of your faith [that is, your lack of firmly relying trust]. For truly I say to you, if you have faith [that is living] like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, Move from here to yonder place, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. Faith is a "firm relying trust in God" and trust can and does grow. According to this translation of the verse, faith is also a living thing (like a seed). There is also such a thing as a spirit of faith (2 Cor 4:13) that can work in and through you. Look up 2 Thessalonians 1:3 where Paul thanks God in the Scriptures that their faith GROWS. It is evident in these verses that faith can and does grow and that sometimes your faith may not be big enough to tackle whatever problem you may be facing. As far as this particular verse is concerned . . . Even Jesus said that they couldn't cast out the demon because of the "littleness" of their faith. |

3 | A FALSE TEACHING? Yes / No | Matt 8:5 | John Reformed | 93266
Dear LDS, The entire focus of my post to you was on what the Word of God says in Matt 17:19,20. I do not consider rightfully discerning the Scripture as nit-picking. Looking at the context of the passage, it seems as if the disciples are surprised at their failure to cast out the demon. "17:19,20 unbelief. The disciples' shortage of faith was not that they lacked confidence or did not expect success--they were apparently surprised by their failure--but because their expectation was not properly grounded in relationship to God. A tiny grain of true faith, rooted in submissiveness to God, is effective. Mark 9:29 makes this point even clearer by speaking of prayer as the key." (Reformation Study Bible) I do not see faith as being a "living thing", as you put it. When the Bible refers to a "living faith" or a "lively faith" it is a figure of speech that refers to faith's power and efficaciousness. Faith, when exercised by the christian according to the will of God and in accordance to His eternal purpose, does cast mountains into the sea! Try to do it aside from God's will and purpose and that mountain is'nt going anywhere. My interest in this topic stems from my concern over the false teaching that christians are "little gods", and that through faith we may acquire anything which our hearts desire; Health, wealth and happiness are our's for the asking, if only we believe. Nonsense! He is the Potter and we are but clay. John |

You are seeking to prove that you are right and that people who believe the same as I do are wrong. For this reason, I will take my leave of you. I know what the Word says about faith and it has increased my faith TREMENDOUSLY. What you believe is biblically wrong. That's all I have to say. LDS |

LDS, I'm glad that the Bereans did not hold the same attitude toward Paul, as your attitude seems to be toward the discussion of Scripture with fellow believers. Prov 27:17 Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another. John |

No, you're trying to sharpen your own opinion. I've told you what the Scripture has to say and yet you refuted what I said. The very nature of this post is accusatory and belligerent. The very first post started out with "A question for the false teachers . . .". You see what I believe and what I have shown you the Bible says as false. I will let you believe that it is false. I know what the Word says. You think that faith for healing, finances, and happiness is nonsense. I say that you are ignorant of the Word of God and that you are being deceived. I have used my faith to make my finances grow and I have used my faith to heal my body and keep it healthy. My faith in God alone is what brings me the greatest joy. So you just keep on believing what you believe and I'll stay healthy, wealthy, and happy through FAITH. LDS |

7 | A FALSE TEACHING? Yes / No | Matt 8:5 | Hank | 93319
LDS: Several meanings of faith appear in the New Testament. [1] Faith is viewed as an intellectual acceptance of spiritual truths (James 2:19). [2] Faith is the fundamental doctrinal content of Christianity (Jude 3). [3] Saving Faith rejects all confidence in human effort and relies on Jesus Christ alone to give to sinful man a right relationship with God. (Phil. 3:2-9). ..... You say to John Reformed: "You think that faith for healing, finances and happiness is nonsense. I say that you are ignorant of the word of God and you are being deceived. I have used my faith to make my finances grow and I have used my faith to heal my body and keep it healthy." ..... Now, please consider a few questions. [1] Where did you learn that faith is a tool to be used as a servant of man's will to enhance his financial status? What makes you think John Reformed is ignorant of Scripture and the victim of deception, and how would you go about proving your serious accusations against this Christian by solid scriptural evidence? Where does Scripture empower us to "use" faith in order to satisfy our greed for money? Where does Scripture guarantee that faith brings financial success, physical health, and happiness in this world? If you engage in posting such adamant statements on faith as you made in your Post 93306, and stoop to accusing a Christian of being not only ignorant of Scripture but a victim of deception, it would seem highly desirable for you to back up your statements and your accusations with something more than opinion based on hot air. You did not cite a single scriptural reference in your entire post. I don't know what John Reformed thinks of your post, but I quite frankly think it is not only an outrageous string of words but one that falls well without the category of personal abuse which, by the way, is forbidden by the rules of this forum and can constitute grounds for removal as an active user. --Hank
