1 | Still not convinced preterism is false | Matt 16:28 | Coper44 | 183717 | ||
Tom, Thanks for your support. I agree that the preterist view is multifaceted. I guess I'm leaning to the full preterist position because it seems to be the most consistent. I have a copy of Russell's book, The Parousia, and I've been to the preteristarchive.com site. They have been helpful in understanding this issue. Thanks again, Coper |

Hi Coper, Since the emphasis was on the clouds receiving Jesus when He left maybe the cloud situation will be obvious when he returns? Rev. 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. AD 70 will seam like a Sunday school picnic when the following takes place and people won’t be wondering about what’s taking place, they will know for certain! Rev. 6:12-17 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; 13And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. 14And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 15And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? 2 Thes. 1:7-8 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Matthew 13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. Matthew 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; Matthew 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Believers will be looking up and unbelievers will be looking down for a rock to crawl under! Nobody will be looking back to AD 70 though. Matthew 24:29-31 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Have fun, CDBJ |

CDBJ, After you've expressed your views concerning the time-frame of the NT writers then we can discuss the details of his second coming. Again, Jesus said he would return to the generation that he was speaking to (notice how many times he addressed his comments to "you" in Matt. 24), he said that some of those standing before him would not die before he came (Matt. 16), and the other NT writers took their que from him and under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit said that his coming was imminent (near, soon, at hand etc.). I believe the writers of the new testament were true prophets because their prophecies came to pass. With respect, Coper |

Rehi Coper You ask for a timeframe. Jesus gave a clear time frame in Luke 21 (Matthew 24/Mark 13). He spoke first of 'these things'. Then He spoke of what would follow 'these things'. Of 'these things' (what led up to the destruction of Jerusalem) He said that they would happen in their generation. They were the leaves on the fig tree (Luke 21.29-30). But of His glorious coming which would follow 'these things' He said that He did not know the time (Mark 13.32). If He did not know the time of it He could not possibly be saying when it would occur. He also said that it would come at the end of the times of the Gentiles, which themselves would follow the destruction of Jerusalem (Luke 21.20-24). How then can His words about His glorious coming refer to that destruction? See Luke 21.20, 24, 27. Matthew omits some of this simply describing it as 'great tribulation', a tribulation which lasted from the destruction of Jerusalem to the present day in accordance with Deuteronomy 28 and occurs during the times of the Gentiles. With regard to Matthew 16 he said that some in that generation would not die until He came on the clouds of Heaven to the throne of God to receive Kingly Rule as in Daniel 7.13-14. That coming was from earth to Heaven as Daniel makes quite clear. It has nothing to do with His glorious appearing on earth. |
