Tim, Thanks for your input. Any attempt to shed light on this issue is much appreciated. It seems that you may have read more into the Acts 1:11 passage than is written. The passage never uses the word "physically". It does say "This same Jesus" or "This Jesus will come in just the same way as you have watched him go". He ascended "in a cloud", and he would return "in a cloud". I don't think the first century mindset would have any problem relating to the use of this "cloud coming" metaphor. This is why I quoted Is. 19:1 earlier. God was going to come "riding on a swift cloud and is about to come to Egypt". Then he fulfilled that prophecy by destroying Egypt. Did God come to Egypt riding on a swift cloud? Absolutely! But, did he come physically? No. He came in the form of the Assyrian army. How do you view the NT time-frame passages that we've been discussing? As I've written earlier, in my opinion, one must begin with the clear time-frame references spelled out in Scripture and keep in mind the relevance to the original audience in order to place the more obscure passages into the proper context. Thanks again for your time. Coper |

Greetings Coper! First of all, thanks for the response! Secondly, before we change the topic, let's flesh this one out a bit. Is the natural reading of Acts 1:11 that Jesus would return metaphorically in an army or that He would return physically on a cloud? In fact, as I read the text, it would explicitly rule out a metaphorical meaning since the text says that He will return in the same way that they saw Him ascend. Did He ascend as an army? ;-) Other Scriptures also support a visible, literal, and physical return of Christ. Mt. 24:30 says, "At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory." Verses like John 14:3 do not allow for the interpretation that Christ 'returned' in 70 a.d. "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." 1 Thess. 4:16 says, "For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. " Rev. 1:7 says, "Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. " Did every eye see the overthrow of Jerusalem in 70 a.d.? I simply don't see how one can take a metaphor from the Old Testament and make this specific reference to a cloud mean an army. Have a great Lord's Day! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
