Please help me. I attend many contemporary Christian worship services. I often have difficulty understanding the lyrics. Some examples: 1. "Let the river flow" 2. "Let your fire fall" 3. "Dance with me Jesus" I don't understand the lyrics to these songs and it makes my worship experience less than optimal. I finally put my foot down with the "Dance with me Jesus" worship song and now I have the Pastor and elders in conflict over the spiritual accuracy of asking Jesus to dance with us...not what I had intended at all! Does anyone else have difficulty over the spiriual accuracy of these songs? Do I really want Jesus to dance with me? Can I stop the river's flow? Isn't the fire falling from God a symbol of His judgment? Do I want any of these things aspart of my worship experiences? Please advise. Blessings! Bud Greenberg PSALM 133 |

Are new worship songs scripturally OK? Some are; some are not. But as far as I am concerned, the new worship choruses are no more a substitute for traditional Christian hymns than lead is a substitute for gold. I hasten to add, this is a highly controversial subject. What I have written here is my own opinion and nothing more. I don't mind adding a few choruses to the praise and worship part of the service. What I do object to is when my church completely forsakes the hymnal and sings ONLY choruses projected off the wall. Again, this is only my opinion, which I am not trying to force on anyone. To each his own. |

Yes, Kalos, I agree that we should not "substitute" the new choruses with the traditional hymns. The old hymns are powerfully packed with Scriptural truth! I love signing the old hymns in church, and regretfully so, I find my church signing nothing but the latest contemporary praise music. I believe that the older hymns are much more "deeper" spiritually than the newer music, but I am not against making new music or new hymns or signing the new music. As long as a song glorifies the Lord and is Biblically sound, then by all means sing it! But like Kalos said "to each his own".. I feel that many of the mainline churches of today are missing out on the Spiritual impact of the old hymns by focusing so much on these newer, seemingly more shallow 'contemporary' songs, even though there is nothing wrong at all with singing these newer songs. However, it would do this so-called "Generation X" good to be exposed to and learn the time honored hymns of old that still ring in the hearts of Christians today. Blessings, Nolan |
