1 | Speak from the midst of the fire to you? | Acts 9:4 | New Creature | 142197 | ||
Hey listen. I'm not gonna get into a big quarrel about this with anyone. I personally believe that God still speaks to us. He spoke to me, and He has spoken to others. How do you think a person hears a calling upon His life to go into the Ministry. if God doesn't speak to people. How do you think that those God calls to far away mission fields know that they are called by God to become servants in the mission field unless they spend time alone with God in prayer, in communion, and in His word with Him in private. How shall they preaach unless they are sent? (Rom. 10:15) Do you think those God calls into a Ministry postion, enter the Ministry on a mere whim or fancyful thought? His Spirit even bears witness with my spirit that I am His. (Rom. 8:16) |

Hi, NC... We are not arguing against the kind of communication from God that you are talking about. Everyone who is a believer is called, etc. Where we get very apprehensive is with those who claim that something other than scripture has equal or greater authority. For example, I knew one lady who said, "I don't need to read the Bible, the Holy Spirit tells me everything I need to know." I've also heard people who call themselves "apostles" who claim that their own words have equal authority with scripture. There are very common cults in this world that claim that some man, counsel, synod, or even some other book has equal or grater authority than the 66 books of scripture. I don't have trouble with the points you are making. But I would say to anyone who thought that they received a personal message from God, "What do you do with it if it contradicts scripture? If it was already in scripture why did you need it? If it was outside of scripture, does that imply that scripture was not quite sufficient?" It is no accident that the scriptures start with Genesis and end with Revelation. Orthodox Christianity sees the scriptures as sufficient, certain, infallible, and complete. (Those words are very carefully and very intentionally chosen.) To disbelieve or disobey scripture is to disbelieve or disobey God. There are very good reasons for having what is called "a high view of scripture." Starting with the moment that Eve decided to eat the forbidden fruit to this very day, there is great error that grows out esteeming the Word of God lightly or trying to augment it. Have I cleared things up any? In Him, Doc PS In the sense that you use, God speaks to me every single day, often many times a day! |
