Hi, Momma... While waiting for Kalos to respond on how he "hears His voice," I'd like to make the following comment and ask the following question: You mentioned John 10. In that chapter Christ states that "the sheep hear His voice... know His voice" (v3-4). In verse 5 it says that the sheep flee any voice that they hear that differs from their Shepherd. This passage does not imply that the sheep have to study to learn the voice of the Shepherd. In fact, if the analogy holds, the Shepherd is the one doing all the work for the sheep (v11) -- including "conditioning" them (v16). You also mention 1 Corinthians 14:1. As you point out, Paul instructs us to desire spiritual gifts. I do not, however, see where he says that we are to learn gifts or develop a discipline for gifts. Gifts are given to the believer by the Holy Spirit (See 1 Cor 12 and Romans 12) as the Holy Spirit sees fit. Again, the believer is passive. We're just called to exercise the gifts we are given. So, Momma, these two passages do not seem to support your point of view. I'm not taking issue with that point of view, just with the passages you offered as proof texts. Can you think of any other passages that state that we need to learn to hear God's voice? Thank you for your patience! In Him, Doc |

Doc - I understand what you are saying about the word "learn" - indeed apart from Him we can do nothing - even recognize His voice! At times, I confess I retreat to my natural ears . . . and they cannot perceive spiritual things. I have to learn to depend upon the Spirit, not only to speak to me, but also to enable me to overcome my doubts and know that what is being said it is indeed of God. God has been faithful to confirm His Word to me, in spite of my doubts! Please understand, I completely agree with you on the authority and completeness of Scripture; I am not placing what God tells me in the same category as the Bible! Much of what He reveals is for personal direction, yet several times God has revealed something about others or a passage from His Word that is not for me but someone else. This is where I struggle with obedience. God is at work all around us, but are we always aware of Him? I believe that God is also speaking to His children, but are we listening for His voice? Yes, He has given us His Spirit so we CAN recognize His voice . . . yet how many believers exercise this gift if they refuse to believe that He continues to speak to us today . . . will they seek to "hear" Him? I believe that God answers those who sincerely seek Him. How He chooses to speak is up to Him, the question becomes, are we listening for HIS answer. How will we recognize His voice if we are not seeking to hear it? I understand what you are saying about spiritual gifts - we do not all have the same. I did not ask for what God has given me; but I certainly could use the encouragement of the body to learn to use it appropriately. Blessings, mommapbs |

Hi, Momma... I think I understand you better now. You are using a turn of phrase while I'm always watching for doctrinal definitions. This does get me in trouble at times. I agree it is a learning process to depend on the Lord and the guidance of His Spirit. I hope you see that the scriptures you cited don't support this idea. Better ones for this are Ephesian 4:30, Romans 8:1 and 4, and Galatians 5:25. I also agree that God speaks to His children... but first and foremost through His Word. This *is* indeed how He has chosen to speak to us. (There is a huge amount of evidence for this if you would like to discuss the question of the authority of scripture.) Feelings, sensations, experiences, philosophy, science, decrees, counsels, ancient writings, modern writings, and everything else take a back seat to the scriptures. To properly understand spiritual gifts, we can study the apostolic teachings about them. Those exist in *only* four places: Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4, and 1 Peter 4. You're also right to expect encouragement from the body of believers around you. This ties into spiritual gifts as well. Hebrews 4 says to provoke one another to acts of love. We are also commanded to bear one another's burdens, care for the poor amongst us, etc. etc. Sadly, we often fail in these more tangible areas. It may be mundane, old fashioned, and unspectacular, but being obedient to one single verse in scripture is worth our submission to a million words of wisdom spoken on our behalf by a fellow believer. I am also quite convinced that every single word of scripture is far more personal a message to me from God than any word spoken to me by men. I'm glad there is concensus on this. I'm glad that we can come together and contend over the Word. It is always a blessing. Won't it be great when we see even as we are seen? :-) Thank you for posting, Momma! In Him, Doc PS I apologize for not keeping clear tabs on these things, but I am still relatively new to the forum. Wasn't there someone close to you for whom you requested prayer? Please forgive me my failing memory. Your husband, perhaps, who was ill? |

Doc - "I am also quite convinced that every single word of scripture is far more personal a message to me from God than any word spoken to me by men." AMEN to this! Re: PS - I'm always requesting prayer! Was it Oswald Chambers who said, "Prayer is the work of the church"? - yet, in my experience, not many punch this time card. I can't recall posting a recent request for any of my family, but I'd appreciate prayer to get into see a Dr. for myself soon, as I just did something to my hip - and no, I wasn't wrestling with God this time! Thanks for your reply Doc, I always look for and learn from your posts. Blessings, mommapbs |

We will be in prayer for your hip, dear sister. I'm sure that prayers go up as the saints read these posts... prayers we know nothing about! Perhaps this hip thing will benefit you as much as it did Jacob, even if you were not wrestling! :-) We will hope so! In Him, Doc |
