Kalos - I think I would take issue point number one - learning to hear the voice of God is not taught as a Christian discipline that we must learn in order to live the optimal Christian life. I believe that living the optimal Christian life is dependant upon the Word; and the Word is also the voice of God. John 10 tells us that Jesus is the good Shepherd; we are the sheep of His pasture, we hear His voice and we follow Him. (John 10:27)What we "hear" from God in our day to day lives will NOT contradict what has been written - all is given for the glory of God and we are blessed when what He has given us is used according to His purpose, to edify the body. (Which could be individually or corporately) 1 Cor 14:1 instructs us to desire earnestly spiritual gifts, especially prophesy. I'd be interested to know how you "hear His voice." Mommapbs: I'm not sure what you mean when you write: "the Word is also the voice of God." You are not giving equal weight to the written Word of God and 'What we "hear" from God in our day to day lives,' are you? After reading my previous post and your relply, I'm not sure you read the rest of my post. You write: "1 Cor 14:1 instructs us to desire earnestly spiritual gifts, especially prophesy." I believe I addressed this when I quoted: 'God's intrusion in these cases is sometimes through special gifts in the body that I believe are in full operation today, but are by very nature individual. In other words, every person has his own gift and EACH PERSON DOES NOT HAVE EVERY GIFT. So this working through gifts can't be a means of every Christian hearing from God. In other words, sometimes God intervenes with a prophetic word, but since prophetic words only come through those people who have the gift of prophecy, it's not the kind of thing we all have to cultivate, to learn to do.' (Emphasis added.) We can desire all we want to, but it is the Holy Spirit, not man, who decides who gets what gift. The Holy Spirit, not man, distributes to each one individually as HE (the Holy Spirit) chooses. NASB 1 Corinthians 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. AMPLIFIED 1 Corinthians 12:11 All these [gifts, achievements, abilities] are inspired and brought to pass by one and the same [Holy] Spirit, Who apportions to each person individually [exactly] as He chooses. 'Finally, there are clearly workings of the Spirit in the area of teaching, conviction of sin and comforting of individual Christians. I admit that those workings are private, individual and tailored to individual people. Those kinds of things are not in question here.' To properly understand an article, it always helps to read the whole thing. Mommapbs, you are always welcome to take issue with what I write. You keep me on my toes and I learn from you, as well. :-) May God richly bless you, Kalos |

Greetings Kalos - I'm glad to read that you recognize that God still speaks! You asked: "You are not giving equal weight to the written Word of God and 'What we "hear" from God in our day to day lives,' are you?" Of course not! First of all, I agree with Doc - What God has revealed about His plan for the redemption of man is a closed issue - but He does not leave us comfortless or without His guiding presence in our daily lives. I am so thankful for His Spirit. I do not disagree that God has given each of us different gifts, but I do not believe that each of us as individuals do not have the abiblity to "hear" His voice through His Spirit as revealed in His Word, through prayer, in our circumstances and through other believers. Because I was raised in tradition that does not recognize the continued operation of spiritual gifts, I struggled for many months when God invaded my life with His voice. Suffice it to say that it is most often unbidden, BUT He has also answered my prayer for understanding of what He has revealed as well. I find that this is an awesome and fearful responsibility, especially when I am directed to another. I find it discouraging to read that God doesn't speak to us anymore except through the Bible . . . this causes me to hesitate and provokes me to retreat to my former doubts. I find that my desire to be used by God in this way wanes when when His manner of revelation is the subject of ridicule or criticism. "Indeed, has God said," comes to mind . . . Thank you for your posts Kalos, I gleen much from what you share with the Forum. Blessings to you, mommapbs |
