1 | Please explain | Matt 7:13 | Hank | 8459
Sharp "Grammatically this phrase 'calling on the name of the Lord' precedes 'arise and be baptized.' Salvation comes from calling on the name of the Lord (Rom. 10:9, 10, 13), not from being baptized." --John MacArthur. If you will take the time to track down the references I cited in the answer to which you have so swiftly responded, you may find that the exegesis I gave is right. --Hank

Dear ezekiel: You asked for my feedback on, I assume, Eph. 4:5; Acts 2:38; Acts 19:5-6 and Rom.6:4 on how these passages pertain to "this baptism stuff" (your phraseology is colorful!) involving the name of Jesus Christ....... You say,"Now it looks to me like this baptism stuff involves the name of Jesus Christ, that's what I'm reading in this KJV. Am I doing it all right so far?" .....Ezekiel, both you and the KJV seem to be doing just fine. If you were an archer, I'd said you hit the bull's eye dead center. --Hank

Hank,Mark, etc.: because Jesus was baptized, baptism was already instituted. What were the origins of Baptism? Did it START with John (ref: "the baptism of John...et al.) or was it a Hebrew tradition at the time?
5 | Origins of baptism.... | Matt 7:13 | Hank | 8485
As with most Christian practices and beliefs, the background of baptism lies in practices of the Jewish community. The Greek word baptizo "immerse, dip, submerge" is used metaphorically in Isaiah 21:4 (Greek Septuagint) to mean "go down, perish" and in 2 Kings 5:14 for Naaman's dipping in the Jordan river seven times for cleansing from his skin disease. At some point close to the time of Jesus, Judaism began a heavy emphasis on ritual washings to cleanse from impurity. This goes back to priestly baths prior to offering sacrifices (Lev.16:4-24). Probably shortly before the time of Jesus, Jews began baptizing Gentile converts, though circumcision still remained the primary entrace rite into Judaism. --Excerpted in part from Holman Bible Dictionary. --Hank

Hank, thank you for the timely information. It was one of those questions that sat dusty in the reliquary of my mind. So should I speculate whether it was an institution established by our Lord for the time of His coming or was it used by God in the context of the culture? Blessings! |
