Subject: Who, besides the elect of God,are saved? |
Bible Note: Dear Ed, Despite your protestations, I think you really enjoy discussing how and why we have been saved! So do I. :-). As long as we do so graciously, I am sure our Lord is pleased. You wrote:"You keep ignoring the basic truth in John 3:16 for God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believed in Him would not perish. All you words, all your proof text fail to prove that is not true." Now...as to your contention that I ignore John 3:16, I really don't believe I have. Nevertheless, I will attempt to provide you with my understanding which differs a bit from your own. (Do you really think I am trying to prove that a verse of Scripture is NOT true?) God forbid it! John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. Jesus is saying that it is the love of God alone, for all the inhabitants of the earth, that He sent His Son among us to die in behalf of those who would place their faith and trust in Him. "whoever" means anyone. God does not take pleasure in the destruction of unbelievers. So we see that it is the loving mercy of God and not human merit that is the cause of His sending Christ (while we were still sinners, Christ died for the ungodly). Why then, if God loves everyone and desires all to be saved, is anyone lost? The answer is the requirement of believing in Christ unto salvation; Only believers are saved. The question then is, Why do some believe but others do not believe? For the answer to that question we need to examine those verses which speak to that subject. I have not been ignoring John 3:16, but looking at other passages (1 cor 2:14; 2 cor 4:4,5 and John 6:44) to find the answer. I hope this clears up some of the difficulties you seem to have with my beliefs. John |
