Bible Note: Nolan: I don't think Randy is arguing with Scripture. What I think he is trying to do (and if he is wrong, I am sure that he will correct me) is distinguish between what is surely ours now and in our possession, and what is surely ours as part of our inheritance. Many passages in Scripture speak of a coming inheritance (1 Peter 1 goes into pretty good detail on this). Is that inheritance ours now? Well, yes and no. It is a sure hope for all those who are in Christ, so it is indeed ours if we trust in Christ's gospel alone. However, there are still many of God's eternal gifts to come which we do not actually "physically" possess yet. For example, I do not possess the imperishable body in conformity to Christ's glory at this time. I think one very valid way of looking at eternal life is "surely ours, just not yet in our hands." This does not deny the eternal security of the believer, but it does acknowledge that there is a blessed hope that still awaits us. Right now we are anticipating becoming all that God will make us, as He has promised. --Joe! |
