Bible Question:
Dear Saints, Is salvation instantaneous, progressive, or both? In Jesus' name, charis |
Bible Answer: Greetings charis, I agree with both Hank and Emmaus. Salvation is instantaneous and is accomplished solely by the power of the Holy Spirit through the message of the Word of God (John 5:24). A repentant sinner, being enabled by the Holy Spirit, responds in faith to accept salvation. The Holy Spirit convicts (John 16:8) a person. To convict means to place the truth of the gospel in a clear light before the unsaved so that it is acknowledged as truth, whether or not Christ is received as Savior. Salvation is a work of God, particularly of the Holy Spirit (John 3:3-7; Titus 3:5). Regeneration occurs at salvation, which is the act of begetting by God, which imparts eternal life. Faith is the human requirement that enables the Holy Spirit to regenerate, and the Word of God provides the content for faith. Salvation is instantaneous and not a process (although its consequences may be processes), and it results in a new nature (2 Cor. 5:17) and a new life (1 John 2:29). And all who are saved are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, since absence of the Spirit is a proof of being unsaved (Romans 8:9). And believers may lose the filling of the Holy Spirit, but not the indwelling (John 14:16). Blessings to you, Nolan |
