Ah, the IC is beyond my grasp as well, Hank. Unless the Lord himself dropped in on the Pope (which I doubt). Ad Jesum Per Mariam. To Jesus Through Mary. To God Through Jesus. I must ask you for a bit of grace, Hank because I'm probably one of those over-doers myself. I hand out Miraculous Medals (designed as seen in an apparition of the BVM) like Halloween Candy. The church came down pretty hard on Marian Devotion. People weren't listening to mass, they were on their knees through the entire service praying the rosary. I think, for some, the fear of God is so great they feel his is unattainable. However, Mary, as you said, is human. Not divine at all. Extremely devoted to God! Much can be learned from her devotion to God and God's will. She knew that her beloved son had to die. How painful it must have been for her. Yet she followed the will of God. How many of us wish for that strength!! Mary says very little in the Bible. Other than Do Whatever He Tells You. What could be better advice? Lisa |

Lisa- How do you know that Mary knew before hand that Jesus was going to die before He was conceived? Even the educated Jewish rabbis didn't realize it and sure didn't teach it! The apostles who listened to all that He had to teach didn't even realize what He meant until after the fact. I think if right teaching was applied here, knowing that the veil was torn in the body of Jesus, allowing us intimate access to the Father at any time, without the need of a priest or mediator, the felt need for praying through or to Mary would be eliminated. I agree, she was a model for anyone. It must have been especially painful for her, knowing that her son, whom she loved as much as any mother could love her son, had to die to save her. I think it was also to be noted that she was in the upper room when the Holy Spirit descended like tongues of fire and landed over ALL the occupants of the room. I love her more because she was just like us, only more of what I would hope to be. God's blessings. Debbie |

Debbie asks: "How do you know that Mary knew before hand that Jesus was going to die before He was conceived?" Um, when did I say that? When I said she knew he had to die, I never said, nor did I mean, she knew this before his birth. She knew because he told her. He told all the apostles several times about what had to happen. When I said she knew he had to die, I was speaking about her pain at the time of his persecution. At the foot of his cross. Her acceptance of God's will. No where in the bible does it say anything about her crying or carrying on. Sorry. I'm trying not to get to wordy and I guess I'm leaving the important stuff out? whoops! Lisa |

I would think she would have known because it was predicted in the scriptures, after all, she knew who she was having.

Hi Norrie, The apostles didn't know Jesus would die until it happened. They didn't know Jesus would rise again either until it happened... so would Mary have known before hand? I keep thinking of the time Jesus taught at the Temple, while Joseph and Mary were heading home to Nazareth and after finding him Mary asked Jesus why He'd done that to them because they were beside themselves trying to find Him. Jesus reply was "Why is it that you sought Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?" (Luke 2:49). Luke 2:50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them. I think that last verse is saying that Mary didn't understand exactly who Jesus was or she would have expected Him to be about His FATHER's business. And taking this a step further: if Mary did not realize exactly who Jesus was, or how God's salvation was to come through Jesus, then would she have known He was going to die on the cross before it happened? Or would she have been as in-the-dark about it as the apostles were until He died and rose again? Let me know what you think. |

I think I didn't read Debbie's response before I answered Lisa. :) She said it was hidden and that nobody quite understood it so I guess you are all right there. But it still seems Mary would have figured something was going to happen just from the miraculous circumstances of His birth tho, who knows. Guess we'll have to ask her when we get there. :)
