1 | Saved by belief or belief and baptism? | NT general Archive 1 | Jayell | 164450
Why did Christ feel the need to be baptized? He had no sin, no need to be saved. Why? To fulfil all righteousness. (Matt 3;15) Jesus life and ministry is our blueprint as Christians. By baptism, Jesus was merely identifying Himself with us. It was an act or righteousness on the part of him who had become, as to the flesh, an Isrealite, to take His place with the believing remnant. By baptism we are identified with Christ, it's our way of pledging allegiance to Him. In Ephesus Paul encountered twelve disciples (Acts 19:1-7) and we know that they were John's (baptist) disciples from only 1 question. "Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said Unto John's baptism." (v.3) John baptized his discples and Jesus His. see John 4:1 It has always been a means of association; NEVER SALVATION. Jesus makes it perfectly clear that we will be condemned for unbelief not baptism. (Mark 16:16b)

He makes it clear that baptism is just as important as belief in Mark 16:16. They are conjoined by the word "and." This makes them equal. If you plant seed and water it, the seed will grow. If you plant the seed but don't water it, the seed will not grow. If you don't beleive in the first place baptism is useless. If you beleive in Christ, you will obey him in baptism so that your sins can be forgiven. Look in Acts 2:38. Baptism has a lot to do about association and salvation. It adds one to the church. You cannot be saved outside the church, the body of Christ as some have thinked. If you are baptized, you are saved, thus you are added by God to the body of the saved. The body of saved people is the church. Look in Acts 2:41 and 47 as well. When they recieved the word, they were baptized, and God added them to the church. Do you beleive that you have to be a member of the church that belongs to Christ to be saved? Or can you be outside the church and be saved? You must remember that there was a difference between the baptism that took place before the New Testament and the baptism after the day of Pentecost, when the New Testament started. The baptism of John and so forth, as Jesus was baptized is not quite the same as our today. Look in Acts 18:24-25. Also look in Acts 19:1-5. John's baptism looked forward to Christ, while our baptism looks backward. Thank you for your time. In Christ, Coty |

Hi Coty, Let's just say I'm in agreement with you on this. Could you please explain how 1 Cor. 12:13 fits into this? "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit." Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

4 | Saved by belief or belief and baptism? | NT general Archive 1 | Jayell | 164523
Paul is not talking of water baptism, starting in (1 Cor 12) he's speaking of spiritual gifts. The body he's refering to is a spiritual body, nothing physical. "For by one Spirit we were all baptized" not by water but by The Holy Spirit! John the Baptist spoke of this spiritual union by Christ, "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the HOLY GHOST, and with fire" (Matt 3:11). Paul also said, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that NOT OF YOURSELVES: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast" (Eph. 2:8,9). The water baptism is a work we do ourselves but Jesus is the one who saves us/baptizes us into His body. Truth in love |

Hi Jayell, I agree. I was directing the question to Coty as we seem to be neglecting this rather obvious role of the Holy Spirit in our discussion of salvation and "baptism"! Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
