Justme, bless your heart, but I am not quite so generous as you in your dictum that the best Bible is the one you will read. In addition to the New World Translation, which is a sordid adulteration of Scripture, I would place a caveat, though not so severe, on such loose handling of Scripture as wildly-paraphrased versions such as the Living Bible and The Message exemplify; moreover, these efforts to pervert Scripture by rendering it "gender neutral" are idiotic, and I'll have no part of any of them. Among the fine, responsible translations such as KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV (English Standard Version) and the Holman Christian Standard Version, surely one can find one to his liking and that is commensurate with his reading ability. --Hank

Hank: I could have made the list longer of versions that I personally think have serious flaws. For example NRSV, RSV, NEB, and several study Bibles made by some Bible Teachers that use a good Bible version. I was forced at Midwester Baptist Theological Seminary to use the RSV. I still look at my notes, but rarely, if ever read that Bible. I noticed you did not mention the NIV in your lists of responsible translations, was that for me to think it is not a responsible translation? I no of no other translation that has such a srtong commitment to the authority and infallibility of the Bible as the NIV. I ask this with respect, not meaning to stirr the pot. I thought I read sometime ago that you liked the New Living Bible. I looked at it but it simply is not what I was interested in. You mentioned reading ability, and the KJV,and the NKJV are at atleast an 11th grade reading level. What should we do for those who read at a 6th grade level, from which I have read is the avrage American non-college educated, persons reading level? I doubt I could encourage anyone to use the Good News Bible. I think you are very fortunate to have the command of the English language that you have. Your words flow like glass. There are few I know that have the ability you have been blessed with. Thank you for your imput. justme |

I personally don't like the NIV. My daughter has to use it for school. She has to memorize Eph 6 and it was so vague compared to KJV or NKJ that you had to really make a leap to understand it. I don't have one handy to look at but I remember the verse where it lists the principalities, it said authorities and my daughter thought policemen, that's how vague it is, didn't even realize it was talking about the demonic realms.
