1 | cult by what definition? | Bible general Archive 1 | teragram123 | 57187 | ||
EdB please answer... I noticed by your profile that you enjoy apologetics/ and the study of the cults... Can you please tell me why there are so few writers that will name the Catholic church as a cult. Yet in the study of cults myself, I find that the definition given for cults fully fit the Catholic church. If she is not a cult, please explain to me how she is Christian. And which definition for cults does not fit her? I was raised in the Catholic church and read my way out... and it amazes me that so few Christians will address the real issues. I never missed catechism class or mass in 33 years... yet never once was I led in the sinners prayer or even told that I was a sinner needing to be saved. The word “saved” was what I thought to be a protestant term. If she is Christian, why was I lost right in the midst of her? I was as devout as I believe I could have been. |

Teragram I’m not sure why you singled me out to ask the question and I see my brother Kalos had provided some information many of you find to your disliking. Let me take a shot at the question. First let me say I disagree with much in the Catholic church and of those things I disagree with I will not and do not defend. That said, if you read the tenets of faith of the Catholic church you will see a true confession of Christianity. That fact from an apologetic point of view is what makes them non cultic. There are many within the Catholic church that have a true understanding of Christianity and make every attempt to see that is what is taught. Am I saying that all Catholic church teach Christian orthodoxy? Absolutely not many/most are focused on works and in some cases purely false theology. Your argument that you attended a Catholic church for many years and was unsaved is not proof that the Catholic church is cultic, but rather shouts of a problem with the teaching you received. There are many in the protestant churches that are equally unsaved, just as there are many in the Catholic church that are depending on Jesus Christ and nothing else for their salvation. Churches across America are filled with people lost and going to hell. My biggest concern within the Catholic church today is the sweeping effects of Maryology or the worship of the Mary the Mother of Jesus. In some diocese this teaching has gotten out of hand and Mary has become the focal point of the church’s worship. This is a rather new phenomenon, within the last century, but nonetheless one that is quickly effecting the church and moving it into non orthodoxy. I also understand the Catholic church outside the US, particularly the church in South and Central America is a horse of the a different nature. I believe from some of the stories I have heard anyone would have to call them cultic, but I also understand they do much of it in violation of decrees from Rome. I have observed many churches and many organizations and I would have to say an average Roman Catholic demonstrates a higher appreciation of things Holy and sacred than most protestants. Many would contribute that as being a byproduct of their works teaching. Whatever you contribute it to there is definitely an air of reverence, holiness and respect that is sadly missing within many non Catholic churches today. Teragram I hope I answered your question. Please do not misunderstand my position I'm not defending the many things that are wrong in the Catholic Church. I merely tried to show you why it is not considered cultic. EdB |

I have read all of the postings to my simple question... why don’t Christian writers name the Catholic church as a cult since my own studies show it to fit the definition given for cults. Are any that are answering and commenting raised in the Catholic Church? It is far easier to study about a religion and speak about it. It is entirely different thing to be raised in it and know what they actually teach. All cults have a store front of beliefs they want to be seen... than there are those beliefs that children are taught and expected to live out. My own daughter, after I wrote a note to the nuns to keep her out of the first communion class, was told to attend against my wishes. She was at the end of the school year and had only a few weeks to complete before we would put her into private CHRISTIAN school. She was sent home with a scapular around her neck and told to never remove it and she would never have to fear the pains of hell. I ripped it from her neck the moment she showed it to me. She panicked saying now I will go to hell. I led her into the sinners prayer again... this time she wanted Christ for sure. That was in 1976... today she is a very strong Christian... has never wavered nor watered down the truth of the Catholic Church. There are semantics used in all cults... say the right words but they have their own meanings. Many on the forum have excused the CC as not being in total agreement with Rome. Hello? You know not what you are saying. As far a saying Mariology has gotten out of hand and this ... they do much of it in violation of decrees from Rome. This is not true... the present pope is re-stressing the rosary as never before. I must cry aloud in praise to God Almighty that HE saved me from it. Had I come first to this forum, I may have been talked out of the Born Again experience. I read the Bible laying on my face before God for two full years, was born again and than laid before HIM for another 3 years seeking truth no matter the pain of being ostracized by my mother and father... leaving all my Catholic friends shaking their heads at me saying I was a heretic... and would suffer the pains of hell for ever leaving “Mother Church”. Had I merely found this forum first, just think all this “divine wisdom” could have spared me all those hours of tears and searching. My prayer is that God in His wisdom will keep the babes from finding this forum until they KNOW their God and can discern the truth from the error. I thank God also that Martin Luther did not have this wisdom of the forum!!!!!! Isn’t it amazing that when the believer had only the KJV, they had to rely solely upon revelation from the Holy Spirit... not man’s helps of the newer easier versions that so many say they like better, because they just can’t get understanding from the KJV. Maybe another question need be addressed... have all that claim to know truth experience the New Birth? God is not a author of confusion... so who may I ask is the teacher of so much diverse truth? Galatians 1:16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: 2 Cor. 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: |

Teragram123 The things you experienced are indeed cultic, I will not deny that. However I will deny that all Catholic church teach that. My wife was born and raised Catholic and was very much saved within the church. her priest and the nuns that she had in school taught her about Jesus and faith in Him with Salvation by grace. Form her I know many find Christian Catholics. I was protestant and as you know to marry a protestant is a process. I was asked to speak to her priest, which we did and basically he wanted me to become Catholic but agreed we should follow God’s leading.. I then was asked to speak to another priest and he informed us, that unless I became Catholic my wife, myself and any children we might have were going to hell. That kind of put a hush to the wedding plans. We then went to the diocese Monsignor and his take was he wanted me to become Catholic but stated very clearly that both myself and my wife had a love for the Lord, that we were saved and that we should follow God’s leading. End result my wife and I married in the church I attended. Two of three priests I believe were very Christian and gave Christian advice one was very heretical. Do I call the catholic church a cult because of that one priest? Look I’m getting drawn into defending the Catholic church and that is not my purpose. As I repeatedly stated there are many things within the Catholic Church I totally and absolutely disagree with. I find their worship of Mary appalling but again within the bounds of the accepted definition of cultic the Catholic church does not fall. Will it some day? I believe if it continues on the course it is presently sailing it will be defined as a cult shortly. EdB |
