Cheri, My pastor also told me that we must obey God rather than man. He said that is also God's word. Are you saying that I must obey the law of the land instead of God? Pete |

Pete, Is there someone you're really wanting to kill? If so, please speak with your pastor about your problem. If not, then why are you carrying on so? The Old Testament is wonderful to read. But in some areas, you must remember the laws were given to a people that were a nation unto themselves, whether in the wilderness or in their own land. Their ONLY law was God, nothing and no one else. For the most part, Pete, man's laws are not that much different from God's. And where they are a bit different, I'm not too terribly concerned about whether or not someone leading me astray to another god will be killed or not - ain't no body gonna be leading this King's kid astray, so all can live. :o) Maybe it would be better if you get to KNOW your Lord before delving into the Torah (the first 5 books of the Bible). It can be confusing. :o) Cheri |

Hi Cheri, What do you mean carrying on? Are you saying that I am incorrectly reading the bible? All scripture is given by God and if I have some questions why do you consider it carrying on? Please tell me. There is no one I want to kill and I don't believe I will ever want to kill anyone, but there is one thing I do enjoy now and then, drinking wine and strong drink. My pastor says that I should not drink at all, but God gives me permission to even use my tithe money to do so. I'm not excessive at all but I do enjoy a buzz two or three times a week. Why should I not obey God's word? Pete |

Dear Pete, once again the New Testament will shed light on what your Pastor is trying to teach you. you wrote: "I'm not excessive at all but I do enjoy a buzz two or three times a week. Why should I not obey God's word?" Really? "a buzz two or three times a week" ?? Well, Pete, here is some of God's Word... Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 1 Corinthians 6:10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. It is believed by most Bible scholars that the "strong drink" mentioned in Deut 14:26 was NOT for getting drunk, or a, "Buzz" as you call it, but merely to drink with the food they were eating as was available to them for drink, and customarily contemporary. You should take your Pastors advice. He has your best interest in mind from a clearly Biblical perspective, I'm quite sure. God bless John |

Dear John, I'm sure the NT will fill me with more light on what my pastor is trying to say and that is why I have already started my readings. I am a third or so through Matthew and already have some questions, but let me answer your last posting. I do not get drunk with wine or strong drink. I am not a thief, covetous, reviler or swindler. I have never been and never will be a drunkard. When I drink my wine or margarita with my dinner I enjoy a buzz that relaxes me and allows me to feel the goodness of God's blessings. It is a wonderful euphoria to behold the majesty of God's creation. In your paragraph where you said most bible scholars believe the "strong drink" mentioned in Dt 14:26 is to be taken with the food they were eating as was available and customary, then you have validated my use of strong drink with my meals. Thank you, Pete |

Pete- welcome to the forum! you wrote: "I do not get drunk with wine or strong drink. I am not a thief, covetous, reviler or swindler. I have never been and never will be a drunkard. Why would you believe that the physiological effects of alcohol is in any way allowing you to "feel the goodness of God's blessing"? From what portion of Scripture do you believe alcohol intoxification results in or in any way involves "a wonderful euphoria to behold the majexty of God's creation"? What we can be sure of, with nothing left to doubt, is the command of Scripture NOT to involve in this experience, as John pointed out- Ephesians 5:18. You're not disputing the clear teachings of Scripture....are you? |

Quite the contrary, The clear teachings of the scripture authorizes the enjoyment of strong drink. In fact it is a command from God. I do marvel at God's handiwork with and without enhancement. Can you answer the question, why would God sanction the intake of wine and strong drink if He intended them to be not be enjoyed? I don't understand how you can read Deut 14:26 and Ecc 9:7 and not accept what God says? Pete |

Hello Peter, The burden of proof is on you to demonstrate the validity of your claim. While there is no absolute injunction against the drinking of alcohol, it is a far stretch to infer that scripture encourages (clearly prescribes) such action for the believer! May I offer that: 1. Your method of interpretation is lacking; 2. You also neglect the culture of the times; 3. The 2 verses to which you refer are not prescriptive toward the consumption of strong alcoholic drink; 4. They also don't constitute a Biblical doctrine. You have engaged in what is commonly referred to as "proof-texting". May I strongly suggest that you search the entirety of scripture before offering such speculative conclusions! Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
