Charis I my humble opinion part of the problem with defining when salvation occurs is with the word “believes” as in John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. The word translated believes is “pisteou” and has far more reaching meanings than our word “believe or believes”. In the Greek the word Pisteou means to stake you life on it, to believe in something to the point you depend on it. We use the word believe to mean anything from a feeling to absolutely. Example I believe it might rain to day (I have a feeling it might rain today) to I believe in this rope (I was rock climbing and fell and this rope caught me). I think the problem with defining salvation comes from the different degrees people believe in Jesus. To some “yes I believe He was the Son of God who lived and died and lived again that I might have eternal life” almost as a statement of fact of history, to “I believe (depend) on Jesus for my eternal life” an acceptance of a desperate situation with only one solution. I think many enter into relationship with Jesus at the first definition then progress to the later with progressive transformations taking place in their lives. However there are those that enter at or near the later and have immediate transformations take place in their lives. I think this holds true for sanctification and holiness. Again as people accept Jesus as Lord and Master (as more than fire insurance)and yield their will plus learn of God’s holiness there are transformations that take place in their lives. I humbly submit this for your consideration, it is based on my understanding of the word “pisteou” and how I viewed “believe” before I got a more complete understanding of the word. Be Blessed and be a Blessing EdB |

Dear Ed, Greetings in the name of Jesus! I receive your post in the spirit given! Thank you! I guess that my question about salvation is for those that DON'T understand Greek, barely getting by in English (or Japanese). There are many that cannot grasp the concept of instantaneous complete salvation. To these it is 'theory' or 'mystical,' and the past is but a vague memory, with many shameful events clouding their vision. These folks, fellow saints, need faith today (and probably tomorrow), because yesterday's faith didn't seem (to them) to work very well. To these, progressive salvation IS salvation! No matter what the pundits say, no matter the Scripture that says the future glory is available in their hearts now because of a past confession. These need reassurance daily, and the Psalm above seems to provide this new, fresh (re)assurance. Bless you for a thoughtful post! In Christ Jesus, charis |
