1 | What were, are, they filled with? | 2 Corinthians | Ray | 83643 | ||
I don't know if Ezekiel is still posting on the forum, so I will ask this of everybody. He has written of the coming of the spirit, the filling of the Holy spirit [sic], received the holy spirit, and filled with the spirit. Others have spoken of the filling of the Holy Spirit, receiving the Holy Spirit, filled with the Spirit. How do we understand the spirit or Spirit? What do people feel that they are filled with when they speak in tongues? Who or what gives them "utterance"? Acts 2:4 Who or what gives them the ability to speak out? Could we see spirit AND Spirit in Acts 2:4? From the heart, Ray |

What you have asked is the basis of the "Pentecostal experience." We believe that all believers can receive a second experience of the Holy Spirit which we call Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The evidence of this baptism is the speaking in an unknown tongue by the believer. We believe that the Spirit of God gives us the utterance. We believe that the Holy Spirit dwells in us at the time of conversion, acceptance of Jesus as Lord of our life. At a later time or at the same time, we give ourselves over completely to the Holy Spirit and Jesus baptises us with the evidence of speaking in an other tongue. We can quench that utterance the Holy Spirit gives us, so there are some Pentecostal or not who have the baptism but do not speak in tongues. Unfortunately we Pentecostals can become too rigid in our beliefs and say such things as "If you don't speak in tongues then you haven't received the "baptism". Poppycock. Here are some scriptures that we base our beliefs upon. Matthew 3:11 11“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Acts 2:4 Acts 19:4-7 ( 4Paul said, "John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7There were about twelve men in all.), the Holy Spirit came upon them and they spoke in tongues. Acts 11:16 16And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John baptised with water, but ye shall be baptised with (the) Holy Spirit. 17If then God has given them the same gift as also to us when we had believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who indeed was I to be able to forbid God? 18And when they heard these things they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then indeed God has to the nations also granted repentance to life. There are more references but these will do as a short list. Ckeck out my profile if you have more questions. I have more information. By the way, read Luke 4, paying particular attention to verse 1 and verse 14. Verrrry interesting. In most bibles if the word "spirit" has a capital "S", it denotes the Holy Spirit. If it has a little "s" it is some other spirit, man's spirit of fear, stuff like that. Although it has been my experience that sometimes a translator can make a mistake. |

Hi Asis, Thank you for taking the time to give me this information because I have been trying to find out what Pentecostal felt they were filled with. However, I need you to talk more with me because I don't know what you are filled or baptized with. You have said that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit results in the speaking in tongues. You have said that Jesus baptizes us with the evidence of speaking in another language. You have said that we give ourselves over to the Holy Spirit and Jesus baptizes us. 1) This shows me that you have a blend of the Holy Spirit and Jesus that is the Baptizer. What are you baptized with? With what does the Holy Spirit/Jesus baptize? What causes them to speak in tongues? 2) You said that we can quench that utterance from the Holy Spirit. 1 Thess 5:19,20 says, "Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances." What is quenched then; the spiritual utterances (prophecies) or the Spirit? I would interpret it as "Do not quench the spirit; do not despise prophecies." I would say that we should be filled with holy spirit, being baptized with holy spirit. How far are we apart in how we see this? From the heart, Ray |

"1) This shows me that you have a blend of the Holy Spirit and Jesus that is the Baptizer. What are you baptized with? With what does the Holy Spirit/Jesus baptize? Hi Ray, Asis is very eloquent so his/her response should be more than adequate, but I wanted to share a moment if I may.I have before testified to this but am compelled again on this gentle thread where others may come seking. Matthew 3:11 [John 1:33; Acts 2:3, 4; Titus 3:5] He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. I was 'saved' as a child. Drawn by the Holy Spirit in a very real manner to the alter of Grace. At this point I was born again. (I did not understand that term at the time). As a young adult I was sharing my testimony with someone and was sharing that although I knew I was saved and going to heaven, I sensed there was something missing. He began to share that the baptism of the Holy Spirit was a different surrender of submission to God, and led me through the book of Acts. When I was 'filled' I knew that the Holy Spirit had come into my life in a new way. The only way to describe this is that just as salvation was a darkness to light experience, the baptism of the Holy Spirit was equally so. Baptism or infilling of the Holy Spirit is supernatural empowerment and requires a surrender of the will. Many believers do not want God working in their life this way, some from fear, and some from a lack of willingness to surrender their will to this degree, and some from simply not believing He wants to, or can fill them and empower them. "What causes them to speak in tongues?" I personally believe the evidence of tongues is for the 'filled' believer to realize they have moved from natural to supernatural, and to assure them that He is indeed present to work.Speaking in tongues edifies the believer. Speaking in tongues is a humbling experience, not one of pride as some think. Pride will prevent one from yielding. However, it does bring a new BOLDNESS to the believer that some may misinterpret as pride. Which brings me to your second question.. "2) You said that we can quench that utterance from the Holy Spirit. 1 Thess 5:19,20 says, "Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances." What is quenched then; the spiritual utterances (prophecies) or the Spirit?" Just as the infilling requires a surrender of our will, so does obedience to the unctioning of the Holy Spirit to operate in the gifts. A person can still allow fear or pride to tempt them to disobey the Holy Spirit..(On a very personal note..I did this once and the grieving conviction was SO great, I have not since resisted His unction) The unction of the Holy Spirit is like Ezekiel said..a fire within, it is a burning strong desire to speak or act. To 'quench' that is to suppress it the Holy Spirit's unction to the point that one does not obey and act. The Holy Spirit will withdraw the unction and conviction will emediately set in. "I would say that we should be filled with holy spirit, being baptized with holy spirit. How far are we apart in how we see this?" I would say that we hould be filled with the Holy Spirit, Himself alowing Him to lead and work through me supernaturally. Forgive my testimonial style in this writing, and not providing as much scripture as you may expect. Purhaps I will have more time later. God bless |

Hi gracefull, Thank you for your testimony and input. Here are some Scripture verses with my interpretation by use of capitalization for what it is worth. I will put in my usual slashes and parentheses for comparisons. l) Luke 11:13, "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give [the] holy spirit to those who ask (Him)?" Acts 5:32, "And we are His witnesses of these things; and so is the holy spirit, which God has given to those who obey (Him)." 2) Acts 10:45-47, "And all the circumcised believers who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the holy spirit had been poured out upon the Gentiles also. For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting (God). Then Peter answered, "Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the holy spirit just as we did, can he?"" Luke 5:25, "And they were seized with astonishment and began glorifying (God); and they were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen remarkable things today." 3) Acts 11:16, "And I remembered the word of the (Lord), how He used to say, 'John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the holy spirit.'...same gift...18 "Well then, (God) has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life." John 1:4, "And gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you have heard of from (Me); for John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the holy spirit, not many days from now." 4) Acts 2:4, "And they were all filled with the holy spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance." Acts 2:17, "'And it shall be in the last days,' God says, 'That I will pour forth of My spirit upon all mankind; and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; Even upon My/ bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My spirit and they shall prophesy. And (I) will grant wonders in the sky above, and signs on the earth beneath, blood and fire, and vapor of smoke.'" Acts 11:18, "Well then, (God) has granted..." Titus 3:4,5, "But when the kindness of God our Savior/ and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to (His) mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the holy spirit, which He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that being justified by His grace we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life." 5)Matthew 3:11, "As for me, I baptize with water for repentance, but *He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He/ will baptize you with holy spirit and fire." John 1:33, "'...this is the *One who baptizes in the holy spirit. And I have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God/.'" Gracefull, it appears to me that you were led through the book of Acts while a young adult. That to me would be where you were filled with the holy spirit and received the word of truth. We all are commanded to be filled with the holy spirit. From the heart, Ray |

Forgive me, Ray, but in all these scriptures listed you do not see the Holy Spirit as the third person of the Trinity promised to take up His abode in each believer as Jesus promised? Tim Moran...where are you? How is Holy Spirit translated in the New Testament? According to my Complete Jewish Bible all of the above verses Holy Spirit is translated 'Ruach HaKodesh'. And in the King James, New King James, and NAS it is translated Holy Spirit. "Gracefull, it appears to me that you were led through the book of Acts while a young adult. That to me would be where you were filled with the holy spirit and received the word of truth. We all are commanded to be filled with the holy spirit." Ray, are you saying to be filled with the holy spirit is to have our human spirit made holy through teh blood? While I agree with this if you are speaking of the new birth, i do not agree with your interpretation that the Holy Spirit Jesus was speaking of is our spirit being made holy. Both my experience and scripture bear witness. I must stay with the interpretaions I trust on this one. When I capitalize pronouns such as Word, it is to convey a message of my belief, the Word being the living Holy Spirit breathed revelation of the person Jesus Christ. An enhancement for communication purposes. I will be out of town for a few days. My mother-in-law is going home to be with the Lord. Her homecoming day! God bless |

Greetings Graceful! Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law's health, but glad to hear that she is going to be with the Lord. You asked: "Tim Moran...where are you? How is Holy Spirit translated in the New Testament? According to my Complete Jewish Bible all of the above verses Holy Spirit is translated 'Ruach HaKodesh'. And in the King James, New King James, and NAS it is translated Holy Spirit." "Holy Spirit" in the New Testament is simply the words 'hagios' or 'Holy' and 'pneuma' or 'Spirit'. It doesn't occur very often, but this is what place where Ray and I have disagreed. While it is certainly true that 'pneuma' alone can refer to something or someone other than the 3rd Person of the Trinity, I don't believe that the two words ('hagios' and 'peuma') ever refer to anything or anyone other than the Holy Spirit (the 3rd Person of the Trinity). Ray believes that there are both the Holy Spirit and a holy spirit, with the later being a thing, not a person. But, I differ with him at this point. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Thank you Tim. I wanted to make sure I was understanding his point correctly. My mother-in-law was 91 and lived a very full life! We will truly miss her but so glad she is now home with Jesus. Thank you and God bless |
