1 | Does speaking in tongues come naturally? | Acts | Searcher56 | 91865
Scripture ... Mark 16:17; Acts 2:4-11, 10:46, 19:6; 1 Cor 12:1-31, 13:1, 14:1-25 justme, greetings. First, congrats on hitting the 1000 post mark. You do have great insight and do ask excellent questions. You do well to challenge people (acts 17:11). Tongues is a spiritual gift, one of several (1 Cor 12:1-10). Since it is a gift of the Spirit, we are not taught it ... and He gives each gift as he determines, not us (vs 11). It is not by observation of others speaking in tongues that one can speak in tongues, nor acquire ant other gift. If one was alone, I don't know if there was a need to use any of the gifts, since it is for the one body ... if together, we should exercise our gift(s) and not try to exercise the gifts we do not have (vv 12-31). In Acts 2:4-11 tongues was a known language ... when angels speak to men, it is understood (1 Cor 13:1) ... and I believe when an unbeliever hears tongues it is a known language to him (1 Cor 14:1-25), otherwise it would not make sense to speak something unknown ... the intepetation is for the reat of the church. I contend the other passages are known tongues, too. Searcher |

If you beleive when an unbeliever hears tongues it is a known language to him. If this were true then there would not have been a reason for Paul to teach the Church in the proper use of the gift. How do you exsplain (1 Cor 14:23) also (1 Cor 13:1) do not state or imply that the language of Angels is always understood by all men. Paul would have no need to say "though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels" if there is no difference.

Scripture ... 1 Cor 13:1, 14:23 (2-40) ... cajam, greetings ... The reason for Paul to teach the Church in the proper use of the gift of tngues is the Corinthians were got carried away by their emotions rather than acting mindlessly The gift of tongues is a language ... and very ordered and controlled (1Cor 14:2-40) 1 CorĀ 14:23 Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad? Tongues without interpreters will give people the wrong impression ... ungifted men or unbelievers will hear more than one language. They will see it not an attempt to minister to them. The church was smaller than the Temple. Think back to Pentecost, when some thought they were drunk (Acts 2:13). Then there was no need to interpetation, for the groups of each language probably were gathered together and the disciples went to certain places in the Temple and started to speak in the native language of the hearers, as the Holy Spirit enabled them (vs 4). 1 CorĀ 13:1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. The tongues of angels is special because of what it delivers! God showed Himself through angels (Gal 3:19, Heb 2:2-3). When angels spoke, the hearer understood. Searcher |

Searcher, Greetings I agree with you on why Paul taught the proper use of the gift of tongues. But what you may not be aware of is that there is a gift of tongues given by the spirit that is subject to the speaker. And there is a tongue that is not subject to the speaker as is the case when someone receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost.(Acts 2:4) and (Acts 2:8) is not at the same point in time Note:"When it was noised abroad".However you are correct that there was no need for a interpretation because of the nations that was present. But neither is one need when one is fill with the Holy Ghost. What Paul taught about the gift of tongues (that is given to who God choices that have already received the Holy Ghost) do not apply when someone receive the Holy Ghost or is beening refilled.
