John I think rather than brush up our image and make sure people know we are not a cult we need to be seeking doctrinal unity as a church. I agree with everything you say while there is doctrinal disunity we do need a way to distinguish one church from another. Doctrinal statements and creeds do just that. My point is this, is disunity what we should content ourselves with? Christianity is a process, each day the Holy Spirit effects changes in our lives, yet on the subject of disunity within the Body of Christ we seem content to leave it status quo. We acknowledge we are Pentecostal and they are Baptist, or we are Protestant and they are Catholic and we seem content with the situation. We don’t agree so let us go on our merry way ignoring the fact we have in effect separated ourselves from other brothers and sisters in Christ. I’m not some idealist that thinks with a little effort all the age old walls will come tumbling down. I’m just asking the question, as Christians should we be content with the doctrinal disunity that exists in the body? To say there was always a division in the body is a cop out, yes there might have been always a division but is that Christ’s desire for His Body? I offer no solution other than that saying trying to find a solution is a beginning. I do not hold myself as an example as one that is above this, which someone has attempted to accuse me of. I’m just presenting the question. EdB |

Dear Ed, We may have disagreements, but we are not truly divided. All those who trust in Christ alone are part of the Kingdom of God and members of His body. Some have caled this the "invisible chuch". It is invisible to us because we do not have the ability to discern the hearts of other christians. Even among Bible believing churches there exist tares among the wheat. But to God all of His people are visible. Even though you and I have gone at it hammer and tong, I still love you and fully expect to see you cheering Jesus and rejoicing among the redeemed of Christ. Til that day, let us continue to strive for unity and season our words with love. John |

John I'm not sure in many cases the church is in any more agreement than the orthodox church and Mormonism. In many denominations they convertly redefine God. EdB |

I must be getting old I replied to myself. :-) John If one applies a doctrine to God that has Him this way and another applies a doctrine to God that has Him another way. Then they must be talking about two different God's. Then they either have one worshipping the true God and the other a made up god or they are both wrong and both are worshipping a false god. They both can't be worshipping the same God. EdB |

"If one applies a doctrine to God that has Him this way and another applies a doctrine to God that has Him another way. Then they must be talking about two different God's. Then they either have one worshipping the true God and the other a made up god or they are both wrong and both are worshipping a false god. They both can't be worshipping the same God." Your statement only re-inforces the necessity of sound doctrines! Whose doctrine is more reflective of the truth, is determined by the examination Scripture. It is true that we are biased by our traditions and pre-suppositions and that these are at times a hindrance to the discovery of the truth. But as I said in a previous post, God may pop our theological pre-suppositions when we least suspect it. In the final analysis, we are entirely dependent upon Him to reveal the truth to us. In the meantime let's not throw out the baby wuth the bath water. :-) John |

USA Today the Wednesday April 16 edition had a very interesting article about people switching faiths. Basically 16 percent of the population of America has switched. Most disturbing was the fact that of the 9.5 million Catholics that left Catholicism 29 percent now say they have no religion. I suspect it has to do with the way the Catholic church handles divorces. Baptist are second highest in the group with 4.6 million changing religion and 15 percent saying they have no religion. Also interesting if someone leaves a mainline denomination such as Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, they will more than likely become Baptist or Catholic. They then interviewed four people that were changing religions, A Catholic that became charismatic non denominational, A Catholic that became Lutheran, A Christian (? No denomination) that became Jewish, and Methodist that became Catholic. The Catholic said he was seeking the unfiltered gospel, in other words he didn’t want anyone telling him what to believe. The Christian that became a Jew could accept that Jesus was the only way to salvation. The Catholic that became a Lutheran did it for two reason first she was divorced and second her new husband was Lutheran. Her statement was only a theologian could tell the difference between the two religions. Last was the Methodist that became Catholic, he did for the holiness and reverence. Also he mentioned the applicability to life of the teaching. He viewed Catholicism as very positive while Protestantism was telling what not to do. Interesting article. EdB |
