1 | Who, besides the elect of God,are saved? | Rom 10:9 | EdB | 74907
John Explain one thing if man is so lost how did they know to offer sacrifice in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament if man wanted a relationship with God he had to respond to what God offered. He knew each year he had to go and make sacrifice for his past years sins. How did he know to do this? Since by your explanation man can’t recognize his sin or even attempt to atone for it unless he is elected. Your right John MacArthur is my favorite teacher, and on this subject and one other I think he is mistaken. Just as I think you are mistaken also. EdB |

2 | Who, besides the elect of God,are saved? | Rom 10:9 | John Reformed | 74908
Hi Ed, Heb 10:4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins... The OT saints were saved by faith, just as saints in the NT era are saved. Rom 4:3 For what does the Scripture say? "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS." God through Moses instituted the sacrificial system. But sacrificing animals then, just as doing good works today, save no one. Which is why I agree with MacArtur; "Faith comes to the believer as a gift from God. It is not something that individuals are capable of mustering up on their own." What is faith? According to Easton's Bible Dictionary: Faith is in general the persuasion of the mind that a certain statement is true (Phil. 1:27; 2 Thess. 2:13). Its primary idea is trust. A thing is true, and therefore worthy of trust. It admits of many degrees up to full assurance of faith, in accordance with the evidence on which it rests. Faith is the result of teaching (Rom. 10:14-17). Knowledge is an essential element in all faith, and is sometimes spoken of as an equivalent to faith (John 10:38; 1 John 2:3). Yet the two are distinguished in this respect, that faith includes in it assent, which is an act of the will in addition to the act of the understanding. Assent to the truth is of the essence of faith, and the ultimate ground on which our assent to any revealed truth rests is the veracity of God. Historical faith is the apprehension of and assent to certain statements which are regarded as mere facts of history. Temporary faith is that state of mind which is awakened in men (e.g., Felix) by the exhibition of the truth and by the influence of religious sympathy, or by what is sometimes styled the common operation of the Holy Spirit. Saving faith is so called because it has eternal life inseparably connected with it. It cannot be better defined than in the words of the Assembly's Shorter Catechism: "Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace, whereby we receive and rest upon him alone for salvation, as he is offered to us in the gospel." The object of saving faith is the whole revealed Word of God. Faith accepts and believes it as the very truth most sure. But the special act of faith which unites to Christ has as its object the person and the work of the Lord Jesus Christ (John 7:38; Acts 16:31). This is the specific act of faith by which a sinner is justified before God (Rom. 3:22, 25; Gal. 2:16; Phil. 3:9; John 3:16-36; Acts 10:43; 16:31). In this act of faith the believer appropriates and rests on Christ alone as Mediator in all his offices. John |

Excuse me Ed, I really don't think I misses the point at all. All men are born into the world "in Adam". They suffer, along with Adam (their federal head), the penalty of Adam's sin which is spiritual death. Therefore the Bible declares the sons of Adam as "dead in trespasses and sin". This is the "natural state of unregenerate man." It is impossible for him to believe. Why? The Bible says "he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised." How then can any natural man have faith in Christ. Again the Bible says that those who the Father gives to the Son He "draws". The greek for "draw" in john 6:44 is helkuo which Strong's defines as 1) to draw, drag off 2) metaph., to draw by inward power, lead, impel... So it is not simply wooing or persuasion but the overwhelming hand of God which brings us before Christ: "All that the Father gives Me will come to Me? Now what? Jesus said "all that come to me I will in no wise cast out but will raise up on the last day". How is it that those whom the Father draws and gives to the Son all believe? Again, the Bible provides the answer: Ezek 11:19 "And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,". This "heart transplant" is accomplished by the Holy Spirit." There is much, much more proof from Scripture which may be added to my poor little synopsis, but time does not permit. This doctrine has been condemned as blasphemy by some on this forum. Blasphemy is a serious issue. Those accusers had better be prepared, to show their proof from Scripture of how it supports their charge, lest they be found to have committed perjury against a brother in Christ. God Bless, John |

John I give up. I quit. You read into scripture not what is there but what you want to be there. I ask how can unregenerated man seek God when you say it is impossible yet we see all through the Old Testament that is exactly what man did. I say how can man find salvation you say by understanding the gospel I then ask how did the theif on the cross find Jesus you say he understood the gospel. I say he understood he needed salvation and look to Christ for it. Scripture says God loved the world you say the elect. Scripture say that none should perish you say only that the elect should no perish. Scripture says Christ removed the sins of the world you say only of the elect. So what is the point you want me to rewrite my Bible to conform to Calvin's teaching and I refuse. Let this stop! I will not respond again. EdB |
