Dear Brian, The doctrine of original sin was universally received by the Church of God until the beginning of the fifth century, when it was denied by Pelagius. He maintained "that the sins of our first parents were imputed to them alone, and not to their posterity; that we derive no corruption from their fall, but are born as pure and unspotted as Adam came out of the forming hand of his Creator." This opinion was adopted by Socinus in the sixteenth century, and is held by the modern Socinians. The Arminians, who derive their name from Arminius, a divine of the seventeenth century, may not speak in the same unqualified terms of the purity of the descendants of Adam, but they do not admit that their nature is wholly vitiated, or that they have entirely lost their power to do good. In opposition to such tenets our Confession teaches, that a corrupt nature is conveyed to all the posterity of Adam; and that, by this original corruption, "we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil." (Robert Shaw) I hope this will help. John |

Dear John, The Arminians do grant that man is born totally depraved. Armians also believe that a man's salvation begins at the point of Holy Spirit intervention-the point of divine grace-, but the Arminian believes it can be resisted. On the doctrine of Perseverance, Arminians rightly insisted that it needed to be studied further. Don't try to pigeonhole me by sticking some name on me. I am Christian only. Pelagian I do not know, and I knew the Gospel long before anyone tried to tell me I was Arminian. The things I believe are Bible/God inspired. If it makes you feel better dealing with Arminian and Pelagian, go debate them, but I don't know them and don't know for sure what they believe. The Bible is all we need. I do know with certainty that a lot of error has been introduced with the Creeds and Confessions of men. Good day. |

Pelagian is a nickname for the doctrine which you hold, just as calvinism is a nickname for my position. It is just a way of facilitating efficient communication. For instance: I am a "trinitarian". Right away you know where I am coming from and considerable time is saved. So, please don't be offended or take it the wrong way if I refer to you as being a "pelagianist". It does not mean you are not a christian as well. John |
