Subject: Alternative to the term "Jesus is LORD"? |
Bible Note: Dear Pilgrim, I think the way you've couched your question has hit a sore spot with most of us. Since we have a strong belief in the verbal plenary inspiration of Scripture, the text of the transmitted word is extremely important. Please consider the following Scripture passages: So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. (Nehemiah 8:8) And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, (Acts 17:2) Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. (Hebrews 5:11) The Word of God, no matter the time, the culture, the audience, requires exposition -- i.e., exposing -- of its contents. This isn't always an easy task. It is made more difficult by the functional illiteracy of your particular audience. This is why the Reformers were so interested in education. Nevertheless, God has ordained preaching as the means of reaching the lost (1 Corinthians 1:21), contrary to the wisdom of our age that seeks to accommodate through some other means than the explicit Word of God (viz. the Jesus Movie, skits, dramatizations, cartoons, etc.). Your task is not an easy one, and it is made more difficult by modern institutions and technology promoting ignorance. However, you have one exceedingly powerful weapon: the Word of God empowered by the Holy Spirit Himself! As you grapple with this effort to make clear the Word of God to these young people, He will provide the proper words, phrases, metaphors, and examples. Don't seek to "make the it [the Gospel] relevant." If you think about it, such sentiments are really pretty silly, no matter how common such phrases are in modern Evangelicalism. There is nothing more relevant to human beings than the Word of God! Absolutely nothing! It can and will stand on its own. Just expose it as fully as you are able. We of the forum will be praying for you. In Him, Doc |
