Subject: is there security of the believer |
Bible Note: THE FINAL PERSEVERANCE OF THE SAINTS - PART 2 -- The biblical evidence for the doctrine of perseverance is plain and abundant. All of it cannot be presented here. We will content ourselves with the following four statements of proof: ......[1] It is proved by the manner by which we are saved. Salvation is by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8,9). We do not work to get salvation and we cannot work to keep it. God does not bring us into a saving relationship by faith and then put us on the basis of works from then on so that we must work to keep it. Salvation is of God and is by faith from beginning to end (Galatians 3:1-5). .......... [2] It is proved by what God does for us in salvation. He gives us ETERNAL life (John 3:15,16; 5:24). He seals us with the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30). He makes us children of God (Galatians 3:26; 1 John 3:1,2). He brings us into a vital relationship with Christ so that He dwells in us and we in Him (John 14:20; 1 John 3:24). All these descriptions of salvation are particularly related to the assurance that what God began in us at salvation He will finish (Phil. 1:6; 1 Cor. 1:8,9). .......... [3] It is proved by what Christ is doing for the believer now. Christ is making intercession for every believer now. Because of this intercession Christ is able to save completely, to the end (Hebrews 7:25). Jesus is now living and active on the believer's behalf. This fact is a solid basis for the believer's security. .......... [4] It is proved by the many direct scriptural references to the doctrine. To list all of them would be to transcribe major portions of the Bible. The promises of God's faithfulness are many. Here is a list of a few from the Old Testament: Psalm 37:24-48; Isaiah 55:3; Jeremiah 32:40). In the New Testament are many references which cannot be explained on any other basis than on the security of the believer. See John 10:28,29; Romans 8:35-39; 1 Peter 1:3-5; 2 Thess. 3:3; 1 Cor. 1:8,9). The reader will be greatly blessed by reading all these references and carefully studying them. --Hank |
