Subject: Saved vs. Works (John 5:24 and 5:28-29) |
Bible Note: Greetings Dabody7! I hope you don't mind if I interject into this thread! I always teach believers to avoid any teaching which goes against or explains away clear statements of Scripture. Your presentation would fit that profile. Look at Eph. 2:8-9: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith?and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God? 9 not by works, so that no one can boast." Notice the wording very carefully. This passage does not say that we are saved by works, nor does it say that we are saved by works, but not works alone. It very plainly says, "- not by works" period. Further, this is not an isolated passage, but is in full agreement with many other verses. Consider the following: 1) Rom. 4:2 - "If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about?but not before God." 2) Rom. 4:6 - "David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:" 3) Rom. 9:12 - "not by works but by him who calls?she was told, ??The older will serve the younger.?" 4) Rom. 11:6 - "And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace." All of these verses state very plainly that works have no part to play in our salvation - ie. our salvation is not based in any fashion upon the works we do, but rather is based entirely upon the grace and mercy of God. In fact, the one verse where people are said to seek salvation by works, clearly indicates that they did not find salvation because they did not come in faith, but tried to earn salvation: Rom. 9:32 - "Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the ??stumbling stone.?" Are Christians to be obedient? Yes! Are Christians to act upon their faith? Yes! But, these acts of obedience and or faith do not save us in any fashion - this is the clear and consistent statement of Scripture. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
