Subject: Saved vs. Works (John 5:24 and 5:28-29) |
Bible Note: About the misunderstanding.... We are saved by works but not works ALONE. Faith has to accompany it. If you repent but do not believe, are you saved? Repentance is required for salvation but if there is unbelief and no faith, it will not work. Repentance is a work. Abraham was saved by works not because he did the work but because he had true faith to do the work that God wanted him to do which is to sacrifice his son, Isaac. What if Abraham had the faith but did not do the works which is to go up the mountain to sacrifice his son? Would he still be saved? No, because he did not obey God. Obedience is a work. I have faith that my truck would start when I crank it but unless I actually go out and crank it, my faith is dead. I must go out and crank it to show that I have faith that it will start. Faith alone does not save but works alone doesn't either. They both must work together. Repentance alone won't save you because you must have faith and believe, too. Obedience alone won't save you because it must be accompanied by faith and works. You must have enough faith to obey God and do the works He wants you to do. Christ's work on the cross reflect in us when we obey the plan of salvation and have the blood of Jesus applied to us. It shows in our work. James was saying that I will show my faith by what I do. In other words, his work proves his faith. Do you have faith that I can catch you if you jump out of a 3 story building? If the answer is yes, would you actually jump? If the answer is no, then you do not have the faith you say you have. If you actually jump, then the work of jumping actually proves your faith. God stopped Abraham from killing Isaac because Abraham was actually going to do the work God required of him to test his faith. If works are not important, then why did God allow Abraham go that far to actually bring the knife in a downward motion? One single thing does not stand alone. It must be accompanied by something. I hope this helps. It takes alot to offend me so don't be afraid to be blunt. Thanks. |
