Bible Note: Dear Brother WOS, Lots of good thoughts! The logical order in which redemption occurs is called the ordo salutis. There is quite a bit of discussion on that topic by theologians even to our own day. God tells us the means by which He accomplishes this incredible work, but He does not explain the mechanics of it. There's two possible reasons for this: (1) We lack the ability to comprehend it, or (2) it would be counter productive for us to be enlightened. No matter. Whatever the mechanism and its details, it is part of the secret (non revealed) will of God. Jonathan Edwards deals with all of this quite well in his "Freedom of the Will." It is a tough book to wade through, but then it is a tough topic. He discusses the very points that you bring up, actually describing the "infusing" process that is used by the Holy Spirit. It may be my own limitations, but I think Edwards pushes a bit too far. One must be careful to say everything that the Scripture says, but not to say more. It is hard not to cross that line!
