Bible Note: Hi, Momma! I'm always happy to hear from you. I don't think I've ever heard you be contrary! :-) You asked, "have you even considered trying to do what Bows44 has suggested?" Yes, ma'am, I have indeed. My mother was a medium. I was raised to be very much aware of the spirit world. It wasn't simply a matter of belief, it was a very experiential thing as well. It was there that I was taught to "listen to the 'still small voice' of the God to whom the Christ spirit pointed." The voice would explain how, among other things, to grow spiritually, help other people, etc. All very benign and even "Christian" sounding stuff. Most of that garbage ought not to be dignified by the retelling! Suffice it to say that I know first hand how deceitful Satan can be. (Hey, he is even deceitful to himself, believing his own lie!) He mixes the lie with just enough truth to get you to swallow. My second experience with that sort of thing came after I was saved. My upbringing left me in a mess. The Charismatics took me in. (I went from there to Full Gospel then to Four Square, etc.) I'll never forget as I was struggling to understand the Scriptures, one lady preacher told me that I didn't need the Bible because I had the Holy Spirit. Anyway, to make a long story a bit shorter, I discovered the wonders of the Word of God. I must confess, I will never understand you folks who say that looking to the Word of God is "limiting how God chooses to speak to us." Hasn't God specifically chosen the Word to speak to us? "God, Who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son" (Hebrews 1:1-2a) Furthermore, the Bible is not limiting in any way! It isn't a grocery list, assembly instructions, or even an encyclopedia. It is the LIVING Word! No one can ever plumb its depths or know it exhaustively. It is one of the few things in our experience that will endure forever! Of course, best of all, the Word of God is God speaking in an extremely personal and intimate way to me personally! It is far more personal than ANY kind of communication that any of us can experience. It is true, complete, sufficient, and clear. I'll trade a million experiences for the rich treasure of the Word! Now, regarding the question of being "more edifying to just suggest that he seek God rather than to diminish or inhibit the potential of his enjoyment.." Momma, the most edifying thing I can do is point a person to Jesus Christ. That is the only way in which God can be pleased. If a man is cold toward the Lord, then he does not understand what God has done for him in Christ. We frequently comfort and encourage people right into hell. That fellow's only hope is in the salvific work of the Lord. My heartfelt prayer is that this person will come to the Lord! That will be a joyous event indeed! Thank you for asking, sister!
