Bible Note: (Continued from last post) The subject you are touching on is known by the Latin phrase "sola scriptura." In order to properly understand the doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture, which is a component of sola scriptura, I would suggest the following passages: 2 Timothy 3:15-17; Isaiah 8:20; Luke 16:29, 31; John 5:39; Acts 15:15, 16; Ephesians 2:20; Romans 1:19-21; Romans 2:14,15; 1 Corinthians 14:6, 9, 11, 12, 24, 28; Psalms 19:1-3; Hebrews 1:1; Proverbs 22:19-21; Romans 15:4; 2 Peter 1:19,20; Colossians 3:16; etc. (Remember that "the infallible rule of interpretation of Scripture is the Scripture itself.") If we believe that God has divinely and providentially preserved His Word, we are not surprised to find the first book to describe the beginning of all things and the last book to describe the ending of all things. So might we assume that there is broader significance to the very last thing that God says to us? "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus." (Revelation 22:18-20) God does, indeed, answer prayers, as you state. But an answer is a response to a request. Hence I continue to affirm that prayer is talking to God, not vice versa. You wrote, "I'll trust God's words over yours or any mans as authority concerning how to identify the nature of the spirits." Yes, I agree. That is very well stated. I am glad that you at least have this aspect of a high regard for Scripture. You wrote, "If we shut ourselves off to God and His speaking to us and our reactions to it, then we invite the unwanted in to our lives. That opens the door far wider for errors to enter in." I am confused by this statement. I never said we should close ourselves off to God. He speaks very clearly and continually through His Word. You wrote, "What is the use of praying for direction and guidance if God in return does not answer? In expecting no answer, you ask to remain in a dark, ungodly world without a guiding light whatsoever." This also confuses me. I never said that God does not answer prayers. God has given us a great guiding light (the Word of God) and the Holy Spirit to help us to comprehend it. Those who walk in submission to the Word will be justified by it, those who walk in rejection of the Word will be condemned by it. Sir, I've said it to others and I will say it to you. My own words are sufficient stumbling blocks. Please do not put words into my mouth... or, in this case, fingers. :-) In Him, Doc |
