1 | Finding 'Act as though you have faith' | Bible general Archive 1 | davel | 71932
A very long time ago I embarked upon my first complete reading of the Bible from cover to cover. While reading one night I remember running across a verse that stuck with me even ten years later. I can't recall the exact wording, nor the book in which it was located, but I recall the gist of it which was:Act as though you have faith, and you will be granted faith. I've since done a lot of searching, but I have never found it again. When I finally had internet access, I searched for approximations and found something like this-"Act as if ye had faith, and faith will be given to you." and other variations on the same theme. This has been attributed to many. Just to name a few: Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul, the Bible, St. Ignatius, Pascal, and an anonymous Baptist minister. If anyone can help me locate the origin of this, it would mean a great deal to me. Thank you so much. -Dave

Dave Hi and welcome to the forum. There are 229 verses in the bible that mention the word faith. None come close to what you think you remember. I read through them and found these four that may shed some light to your problem. Faith is something that grows in us, when we have faith for the small things and see that God is trustful we can have faith for larger things. David’s faith to face Goliath wasn’t instant, remember how he testified how God had preserved him when he was a shepherd against the bear and the lion. He said God has delivered me from the paw of the bear and of the lion He will deliver me from the Philistine. 1 Sam 17:37. Faith is something that grows and becomes stronger as we exercise it. Matthew 21:21 So Jesus answered and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' it will be done. Romans 1:17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith." Romans 11:20 Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. 2 Cor. 10:15 not boasting of things beyond measure, that is, in other men's labors, but having hope, that as your faith is increased, we shall be greatly enlarged by you in our sphere, Hope this helps EdB |

Well it looks to me that Jesus had a few things to say about faith. Pay attention to verse 12. Matthew 8 :: King James Version (KJV) 8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. 9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. 11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour. |

The original point to this thread was that faith is a granting. That you have to do nothing but belive. Jesus went to work. So must we. By your fruits (works) you are known. The words of Jesus about the Roman Centurion says much. First you have to have faith in yourself , (that you have seen, heard and understand) what Jesus is saying about the Roman Centurion ( a man of responsibility) are in the words spoken by Jesus. Next Jesus says (in my understanding) that blind belief is not enough. You have to think, look at the proof and then judge if someone or something is good or evil, by their actions. Seems to me the children Jesus speaks of that are cast into darkness have not thought things out in the search for truth, or upon finding truth have done little to advance the truth. And yet at first they sit down with the families in the Kingdom. All the heads of the families listed in the verses have worked hard and done much in service to Father. The first work starts with oneself. |
