Dear middleton, Is your understanding that Col. 2:12 is a reference to water baptism and not spiritual? If so on what basis would you conclude that:-) Speaking The Truth In Love, BradK |

Dear BradK, You would have to explain what you mean by spiritual. Jesus taught Nicodemus that being born again involves water and the Spirit (John 3:1-5). I can find no basis in the Bible for spiritual baptism - If you can point me to some scriptures I will be happy to study them out. Thanks, Rocky |

Hi Rocky, I'd refer you to 1 Cor. 12:13, "For by ONE SPIRIT we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit." The spiritual "baptism" is the reality, water is merely symbolic. As Dr. Kenneth Wuest notes regarding this, "It is the baptism with the Spirit in the sense that God the Father does the baptizing through His personal agent, the Holy Spirit." Hi Brad, The first century church translated the tachings that are now Col 2:12,Acts 2,Mark 16,Rom 6,et al to mean water baptism. I personally am not a Bible scholar but all my study has shown me that the baptism in water is required (Water and the Spirit - John 3) Acts 2 - Repentance (which presupposes belief) plus Baptism brings forgiveness of sins plus Holy Spirit. Water baptism is where we participate in the Death,Burial, and the Resurrection of Jesus, meet the Blood of Jesus (which forgives sin) and receive the Holy Spirit Rocky |

Hi Rocky, I don't necessarily disagree with what you say, however my question is still: What are we to make of the clear statement in 1 Cor.12:13? In light of 1 Cor. 12:13, I do not take any of the Pauline references as referring to water, but rather spiritual:-) Speaking The Truth in Love, BradK |

Dear Brad, First, have I said how much I like your signature line - Speaking the Truth in Love - that is great - wish I had thought of it first! The greek word used here implies water. My lexicon puts it this way:baptizo bap-tid'-zo from a derivative of bapto; to immerse, submerge; to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism:--Baptist, baptize, wash bapto :bap'-to a primary verb; to whelm, i.e. cover wholly with a fluid; in the New Testament only in a qualified or special sense, i.e. (literally) to moisten (a part of one's person), or (by implication) to stain (as with dye):--dip. Taking these with Jesus' teachings in John 3, Mark 16 and Matthew 28 as well as Peter's teachings in Acts 2 and I Peter and add that to Pauls own conversion story in Acts, BAPTISM IS CLEARLY ESSENTIAL TO SALVATION. It is so essential that in Acts 19, Paul had the people baptized in Jesus name even though they had been baptized under John the Baptist' baptism of repentance(which was taught prior to the DBR of Jesus and thus the new covenant). Hope this helps. Rocky |
