1 | Kill your brother and drink strong drink | James 2:10 | petedavis6263 | 211049
Hi Cheri, What do you mean carrying on? Are you saying that I am incorrectly reading the bible? All scripture is given by God and if I have some questions why do you consider it carrying on? Please tell me. There is no one I want to kill and I don't believe I will ever want to kill anyone, but there is one thing I do enjoy now and then, drinking wine and strong drink. My pastor says that I should not drink at all, but God gives me permission to even use my tithe money to do so. I'm not excessive at all but I do enjoy a buzz two or three times a week. Why should I not obey God's word? Pete |

Dear petedavis6263, Welcome and I do hope you continue your study. Please keep in mind as you do that your chief and highest purpose is to glorify God and to fully enjoy Him forever. 1Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. All we do! Your reference to enjoying a buzz a couple time a week… would you be able to show, in light of Scripture, that you are glorifying God in doing so? Honestly! Without rationalizing or compromising what God has said? 1Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. “There is a liberty wherewith Christ has made us free, in which we must stand fast. But surely he would never carry this liberty so far as to put himself into the power of any bodily appetite. Though all meats were supposed lawful, he would not become a glutton nor a drunkard. And much less would he abuse the maxim of lawful liberty to countenance the sin of fornication, which, though it might be allowed by the Corinthian laws, was a trespass upon the law of nature, and utterly unbecoming a Christian. He would not abuse this maxim about eating and drinking to encourage any intemperance, nor indulge a carnal appetite: “Though meats are for the belly and the belly for meats (1Co_6:13), though the belly was made to receive food, and food was originally ordained to fill the belly, yet if it be not convenient for me, and much more if it be inconvenient, and likely to enslave me, if I am in danger of being subjected to my belly and appetite, I will abstain.” – Matthew Henry Stand in His grace WOS |

Dear WOS, Thank you for your welcome words. Yes I will continue to study God's word as it has already freed me from unwarranted guilt. It is a wonderful feeling. When one embraces and follows a command from God, don't you think it is the ultimate glorification of His majesty? After a hard day's work I come home and enjoy my drink with my dinner, I gaze out at the sunset and I remember what God says in Ecc 9:7, "Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God accepteth thy works." How much better can I glorify my God? I can't help but feel God's blessings all around me. Remember, God says not to change what He has commanded. If I subscribe to your way of thinking then I will be guilty of ignoring His wisdom. Yes you are correct regarding the evil of excess, but that applies to practically everything. If you drink too much water it is bad for you, if you eat too much food it is bad for you, if you overwork your body it is bad for you, if you focus too much on the acquisition of money it is bad for you. From all indications God does not forbid strong drink, He just forbids the overindulgence of it. I'm not sure what your meaning is with 1 Cor 6:12, but isn't there a verse in the NT that says "let no man judge you in meat or drink?" Aren't you guilty of not only going against God's command to drink strong drink, but judging those who do? Pete |

Hi Pete, I'm with you, brother. We must be very careful about how we post on this site, because of the format, it is very easy to be judged as being wrong for something in our notes, when our accusers have such a small portion of information. I am not knocking the other posters, they are all good and godly people, I am sure. And they do mean well, but in the past, I have been judged for a time by not stating my case clearly enough and I have been made to feel unwelcome. You are not saying how much is a 'buzz', but, that is a real buzz-word on any forum such as this. (o; There are some who like to go to amusement parks for the rush, but they are not likely to be challenged for it. Alcohol is often abused, like many other things that are created by God, and brought into this world. My feelings are that alcohol was put into society for a reason. Such as a marriage, where people are more jolly by releasing inhibitions, to an agreeable limit of course, and this makes the memories more fun to recall in the years down the road. But, alcohol does get abused, and people are hard on all that drink this 'devil's drink' for that reason. Look at sex, for instance. Something that God placed in this world for our enjoyment, and as a way to propagate the human race, becomes abused through such things as pornography, and there are many who look down on sex as being dirty. Maybe that is not a good parallel, there are certainly others, but I hope you get my point. Let me ask you, Pete, Do you see yourself as committing sin? Is the Holy Spirit convicting you? Does God's Word say you are wrong in this? -remember to keep the verses in context. Again, I have not always been very popular here, because I try to learn, but there were times when I overstayed my welcome by not watching my words, So I pray for forgiveness from our gracious host. Amen. |

5 | Kill your brother and drink strong drink | James 2:10 | petedavis6263 | 211092
Hello Written, Thank you for your kind words. Ever since I was a little boy I had a remarkable kindness towards others. I was a good athlete so I was never bullied and I never bullied anyone. I had and I still have a wonderful empathy towards others. Even in my business career as an adult, I am a straight shooter. I have been very successful as my blessings have been abundant. My pastor told me once as God spoke in 1 John 3:4-9, whoever is born of God cannot sin. Well, I do believe strongly that I am born of God. You ask if I see myself committing sin, I say yes, but it is sin only to those who judge incorrectly. In my own eyes I see clearly. As 1 John 5:18, whoever is born of God cannot be touched by the wicked one. If I offend anyone, I am deeply sorry. I do not mean to insult or hurt anybody. If I am unwelcomed because I speak the truth as my eyes see it, then I ask for your forgiveness. Thank you for your kind words. Pete |
