1 | Why is 2 Thess. 2:7 mis-translated? | 2 Thess 2:7 | justme | 73238
Searcher56: I am glad to see you are still active. I found a very interesting fact recently, as I have been previewing the TNIV. I stumbled on this quite by accident, and this knowledge has helped me better understand todays versions and their different readings of the same verse. For more than the last fifty years most translations have used what is called Functional Equivalence. Also known as dynamic theory. This type of translation focuses on the ease of understanding for the intended reader. Transparent translations or more direct translations like the KJV or NASB, as example, are harder for most modern readers. Two thirds of the world are able to understand either the NASB or KJV, which is profoundly sad. Often the words used in FE miss the mark or come as close as the translation team can. The popular NIV and NLT are FE as well as NRS, ESV, and NKJV just to name a few. That is what makes a big difference. I hope you find this as interestig as well. justme |

Justme, this is not intended to put you down or show you up! I believe that you continue to be a valuable asset to the forum and admire your kind spirit. But on the matter of the ESV and NKJV being among the genre of versions that widely subscribe to the dynamic or functional equivalence school, neither of them does, not according to the translators' introductions of both translations. In its introductory remarks, the ESV is described as being an "essentially literal" translation "that seeks so far as possible to capture the precise wording of the original text and the personal style of each Bible writer. As such, its emphasis is on 'word-for-word' correspondence, at the same time taking into account differences of grammar, syntax, and idiom between current literary English and the original languages."..... In its introduction, the NKJV is described as employing what their translators describe as "complete equivalence" in translation, meaning as they point out, "This principle of complete equivalence seeks to preserve all of the information in the text, while presenting it in good literary form. Dynamic equivalence, a recent procedure in Bible translation, commonly results in paraphrasing where a more literal rendering is needed to reflect a specific and vital sense." The introduction then proceeds to compare specific textual examples of how different renderings can emerge from using each translation principle..... The NRSV has, in my view, corrupted the text by its introduction of so-called "gender-neutral" language and by failing to tighten up some of the more controversial and, some would say, liberal, renderings of its predecessor, the RSV. It is interesting to observe that both the ESV and the NRSV use as their base the RSV; that is, both are in some sense revisions of the RSV. The ESV corrected the flaws of the RSV, but the NRSV retained some of the original flaws of the RSV and added more of its own. [For the sake of readers who may not be familiar with all the abbreviations I've used in this post, here's an explanatory note: RSV...Revised Standard Version. NRSV...New Revised Standard Version. NKJV...New King James Version. ESV...English Standard Version. --Hank

Hank: I always appreciate your input, regardless if it is correction or praise. I know full well that you are not, nor would you put down or show up a person. I genuinely thank you for correcting my mistake. I mis read some information, and got it a little messed up. I sincerely regret that and it would serve me well to read something at least three times to make sure of my facts. I am glad the Forum has a wise and knowledgeable person like you and others. This is such a wonderful place to grow and have others help out in times like this. I continue to learn and grow in understanding so much in the forum. You constantly amaze me with your gracious way you help and encourage people. You have a very special gift, and the Lord is using you just where you are. Blessings from cold Missouri. justme |
