Subject: Why is 2 Thess. 2:7 mis-translated? |
Bible Note: Greetings Taleb! Thanks for the response! The reason I asked about the neuter is simply this: While 'midst' may be a neuter noun or adjective, it is not the subject of the sentence or clause, so it does not determine the gender of the verb. So, 'ginomai' can be either neuter, masculine, or feminine. The best bet though would be masculine, since the subject of the sentence is masculine. The reason I asked about why you consider this a mis-translation is simply this: This phrase 'out of the midst' appears to be a figure of speech. A very literal translation would be simply 'out of the middle'. However, there is evidence in Greek manuscripts that this particular phrase was also used to mean 'removed'. So, I wouldn't see this as a mis-translation as much as a translational choice. The kind which translators are faced with constantly. Many times, a very literal reading in English does not really convey an accurate rendering of the Greek. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
