Can salvation be lost? Heb 2:1 2:1For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. NAS Heb 3:12 12Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God. NAS 2 Peter 2:20-22 20For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22It has happened to them according to the true proverb, "A dog returns to its own vomit," and, "A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire." NAS James 5:19-20 19My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back, 20let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins. NAS Heb 10:26-29 26For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. 28Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? NAS Heb 10:32-36 32But remember the former days, when, after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings, 33partly, by being made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming sharers with those who were so treated. 34For you showed sympathy to the prisoners, and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and an abiding one. 35Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. NAS Finally, Jude 5-6 5Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. NAS Beginning with the Nation of Israel, Jude gives example after example of those who had been "saved" by God (in the O.T.), only to ultimately "lose their salvation." This warning he gave to N.T. believers, lest they should wind up in a similar shape. AO |

Ah! AO: You have given us a big and daunting task, to explain all of those quotations in one post and to show that yet our salvation is not affected. I dare not attempt it. Instead I will ask the question that Paul asked: If God so loved us that he gave to us his Son, will he not also with him freely give us all things? Whatever it takes to keep me safe. His Holy Spirit, his power, his strong hand, his intercessory ministry, his forgiveness, his patience, his respect for the blood of Christ, his disdain for double jeopardy, whatever it takes, I have it. So forgive me if I summarize it all under his love for his blood-bought child. I’ve found a friend, O such a friend He loved me ere I knew him He drew me with the cords of love And thus, he bound me to him And round my heart still closely twine Those ties which naught can sever For I am his and he is mine Forever, and forever I’ve found a friend, O such a friend All power to him is given To guard me on my onward course And bring me safe to heaven The eternal glories gleam afar To nerve my faint endeavor So now to work, to watch, to war But not to worry. Never! It’s all up to him, and he is able. I am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed to him. Therefore I will never worry about losing my salvation. |

You said: "It’s all up to him, and he is able. I am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed to him." I could say to 600 people; I am able to take you from New York to London, if you get aboard my ship, however if somewhere in between New York and London, one of you either fell over board, or jumped over-board and drowned, that would not reflect negatively upon my ability to have taken you all the way to London. I still would have been able to get you to London had you remained aboard my ship. The other 599 people remained in the ship and I was able to take them the full distance to their final destination. I think what you have shown us is that you are somewhat limited in your abilities. God has no such limits. He is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. It must be said, however, that salvation is not like getting on a boat. The Lord requires repentance toward God, and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. When we turn to him in faith he saves us, and the job is finished. Yes, there are other things required of us after that, but not for salvation. We love him because he first loved us. We serve him because we are saved. Let us, each of us, make sure we are. But we cannot save ourselves. We need him. |

Lets not read more into "He is able" than what is written "He is able" means exactly that. The secondary part that must be considered is: Are you willing? Or since becoming saved are you now a puppet, or robot, that is unable to still make choices? Blessings New Creature |

'Lets not read more into "He is able" than what is written "He is able" means exactly that. The secondary part that must be considered is: Are you willing?' Funny...I don't see the words "Are you willing?" in the text anywhere at all...who is the one reading beyond what the text says? :) You wrote: "Or since becoming saved are you now a puppet, or robot, that is unable to still make choices?" At no time are we puppets or robots, before or after salvation. The essential question is whether God's grace accomplishes its purposes (i.e. in making us willing) or not. Does the efficacy of God's work really come down to me? What a reason to boast that would be! --Joe! |
