THE FINAL PERSEVERANCE OF THE SAINTS - PART 2 -- The biblical evidence for the doctrine of perseverance is plain and abundant. All of it cannot be presented here. We will content ourselves with the following four statements of proof: ......[1] It is proved by the manner by which we are saved. Salvation is by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8,9). We do not work to get salvation and we cannot work to keep it. God does not bring us into a saving relationship by faith and then put us on the basis of works from then on so that we must work to keep it. Salvation is of God and is by faith from beginning to end (Galatians 3:1-5). .......... [2] It is proved by what God does for us in salvation. He gives us ETERNAL life (John 3:15,16; 5:24). He seals us with the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30). He makes us children of God (Galatians 3:26; 1 John 3:1,2). He brings us into a vital relationship with Christ so that He dwells in us and we in Him (John 14:20; 1 John 3:24). All these descriptions of salvation are particularly related to the assurance that what God began in us at salvation He will finish (Phil. 1:6; 1 Cor. 1:8,9). .......... [3] It is proved by what Christ is doing for the believer now. Christ is making intercession for every believer now. Because of this intercession Christ is able to save completely, to the end (Hebrews 7:25). Jesus is now living and active on the believer's behalf. This fact is a solid basis for the believer's security. .......... [4] It is proved by the many direct scriptural references to the doctrine. To list all of them would be to transcribe major portions of the Bible. The promises of God's faithfulness are many. Here is a list of a few from the Old Testament: Psalm 37:24-48; Isaiah 55:3; Jeremiah 32:40). In the New Testament are many references which cannot be explained on any other basis than on the security of the believer. See John 10:28,29; Romans 8:35-39; 1 Peter 1:3-5; 2 Thess. 3:3; 1 Cor. 1:8,9). The reader will be greatly blessed by reading all these references and carefully studying them. --Hank

Multiple beliefs on this subject..................................... The belief that Hank is proposing in this thread is commonly referred to as "once saved, always saved". There are large numbers of Christians who believe that it is true that a person who has truly been saved cannot ever completely turn away from God and lose their salvation. There are also large numbers of Christians who believe that it is possible for a person to become a true Christian, and then later in life to change their mind and decide to reject God and His salvation. I believe that this second option is true (search for post number 15952). Those who believe this second option are often concerned by the verses Hebrews 6:4-6, and wonder if they can ever return to God after rejecting Him. I and other Christians believe that it is still possible to return to God (see post 257332). For anyone reading these posts, please keep in mind that both perspectives are considered to be orthodox. In other words, both are reasonable interpretations of scripture and have been accepted throughout centuries of church tradition. Therefore, please try to read support for both sides before coming to your own conclusion. |

Thank you, Sir Pent, for your response. I appreciate your views, and in no way do I feel that your views on the security of salvation make you any less a Christian brother to me! As we all of us who profess Christ as Savior and Lord "press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 3:14), it is imperative, I believe, to keep in mind that neither your view nor mine of salvation's security absolves us from the duty to strive always to love Him more dearly, to know Him more clearly, and to follow Him more nearly. God bless you and keep you under His loving wing. --Hank

Personal Note........................................................ Hi Hank, They will know we are Christians by our love. And they see our love when they see kindness in the midst of disagreement. Thanks for your kind words. |
