If one remains in Him then yes, but do "abide" Make the choice to abide, and no one can remove you. 1 John 2: 28 And now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. Sincerely Henry and Emmy |

THE FINAL PERSEVERANCE OF THE SAINTS - PART 2 -- The biblical evidence for the doctrine of perseverance is plain and abundant. All of it cannot be presented here. We will content ourselves with the following four statements of proof: ......[1] It is proved by the manner by which we are saved. Salvation is by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8,9). We do not work to get salvation and we cannot work to keep it. God does not bring us into a saving relationship by faith and then put us on the basis of works from then on so that we must work to keep it. Salvation is of God and is by faith from beginning to end (Galatians 3:1-5). .......... [2] It is proved by what God does for us in salvation. He gives us ETERNAL life (John 3:15,16; 5:24). He seals us with the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30). He makes us children of God (Galatians 3:26; 1 John 3:1,2). He brings us into a vital relationship with Christ so that He dwells in us and we in Him (John 14:20; 1 John 3:24). All these descriptions of salvation are particularly related to the assurance that what God began in us at salvation He will finish (Phil. 1:6; 1 Cor. 1:8,9). .......... [3] It is proved by what Christ is doing for the believer now. Christ is making intercession for every believer now. Because of this intercession Christ is able to save completely, to the end (Hebrews 7:25). Jesus is now living and active on the believer's behalf. This fact is a solid basis for the believer's security. .......... [4] It is proved by the many direct scriptural references to the doctrine. To list all of them would be to transcribe major portions of the Bible. The promises of God's faithfulness are many. Here is a list of a few from the Old Testament: Psalm 37:24-48; Isaiah 55:3; Jeremiah 32:40). In the New Testament are many references which cannot be explained on any other basis than on the security of the believer. See John 10:28,29; Romans 8:35-39; 1 Peter 1:3-5; 2 Thess. 3:3; 1 Cor. 1:8,9). The reader will be greatly blessed by reading all these references and carefully studying them. --Hank | ||||||

Hank, I agree with you to the hilt that all true believers persevere to the end (a bit tautological, perhaps, but no doubt about it; all your scriptures attest to it). You'll also agree, I'll bet, that knowing we can fall away is as valuable as knowing we can be saved. "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;" (Heb 2:3) A moutaineering anology: I'm 2000 feet up on a sea of rock; the trees look like Lionel models below me; a storm is gathering; I'm far from the top; I'm realizing I'm afraid of heights; my Belayer is high above; He calls for me to follow; Rather than freak, I follow. All your scriptures attest to that. Bottom line, I'm doing my best to stick with Jesus, confident that's where He wants me. Hope to get to the top. (Watch for that Calvinist rockslide across the once-saved-always-saved route, however). Colin |
