No, you do not have to be baptized to be saved. Jesus told the thief on the cross in Luke 23:43 that he would be with Him in paradise that very day. Oviously, the repentant thief never had a chance to be baptized. Romans 10:9-10 tells us how to be saved and verse 11 tells us not to be ashamed of our faith in the Lord. Therefore, if one is saved, he/she should welcome the opportunity to publicly proclaim Jesus as Savior. Baptism is a public acknowledgement of our identification with Jesus Christ's death burial and resurrection. Now as far as a hendrance to approaching Jehovah, I would say that if one has a problem with being baptized, he/she is lacking in the spirit of unity which Christ desires to have with those who are his. Refusing or neglecting baptism can be a sign of disobedience and God may hear your prayer, but the answer may be hindered. Romans 10:9-11

First of all, I wonder if by religion, you mean Christian denominations or do you mean another religion such as Islam, Judiasm, Jehovah's Witnesses, etc? Jesus said in John 14:6 that He is the way the truth and the life and that no man cometh to the Father except through Him. So Christian Baptism in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, by a minister of the Gospel is how and by whom one should be baptized. In my opinion, by reading about Jesus' baptism in Matthew chapter 3 and the water baptisms in the book of Acts, baptism should be by immersion. By the way, religion, will not save anyone, only a close personal relationship with Jesus Christ. True Christianity is not a religion, but a relationship. The difference in Christianity and religions is that true Christianity is salvation by accepting the free gift of salvation through what Christ did on the Cross. Every other religion is based on man's effort to be good enough. Find a good Bible believing Christian Church and receive instruction on the meaning and purpose of baptism. Then your baptism will be an everlasting source of joy.

Actually, to me, baptism is an outward showing to all that you have accepted your salvation. It doesn't matter to me what denomination someone is baptised in. I agree though that it should be by immersion, not a little sprinkle LOL. Also it is an adult decision, not something that a baby could consent to.
