1 | Saved vs. Works (John 5:24 and 5:28-29) | John 5:24 | John Reformed | 63639
Dear Dabody, You asked "If you repent but do not believe, are you saved?". The answer is NO! But, it is important to remember that just as faith is a gift from God, so is repentence as well. Acts 5:31 "He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins." Acts 11:18 When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, "Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life." Tim 2:25 with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, Repentence and faith accompany each other in salvation. They are bestowed upon those whom God has chosen and whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life. Rom 8:30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. I believe that the Bible teaches that God chose a people to give to His Son. That He predestined them for salvation and that when in due time He draws them, He accomplishes their salvation by graciously giving them a new heart. Faith and repentence are both attributes of this new heart and, for the fist time the person whom God has chosen, has the ability and desire to embrace Jesus. John 6:44 "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day." I take no credit for my salvation. Salvation is of God. Top to bottom, inside and out. I love Him because He first loved me. We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone; all the glory for our salvation goes to God alone. If a person dares to stand before God Almighty and claim entrance into heaven based on works.....What can I say? I tremble to think about it! Personaly, My hope rests in the shed blood of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Not holy John Reformed the "worker of great deeds". May God Bless you with knowledge and wisdom. John Reformed |

2 | Saved vs. Works (John 5:24 and 5:28-29) | John 5:24 | Hank | 63658
Hello, John. Picking up on your good line "If a person dares to stand before God Almighty and claim entrance to heaven based on works..." brings to mind the familiar passage of Isaiah 64:6. I shudder to think that if you, John, and I, Hank, came face to face with the Holy God, dragging our pitiful little "Daily Log of Good Deeds I Performed on Earth" with us, and heard the pronouncement by God Himself: You, John and Hank, have become as one unclean, and all your righteous deeds are like a filthy garment, and you wither like a leaf, and your iniquities like the wind take you away."..... The scenario I trust, and know that you do too, is that when we find ourselves face to face with the Almighty God, we can indeed proclaim with gratitude that we are justified by the His grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. It is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and He only who paid the price on the cross, and through faith in Him alone is any man, no matter how many good deeds he has entered in his log book, ever justified. Grace to you, brother in Christ. --Hank

Brothers, Amen too! A final thought on this question is from 1 Cor. 1:30-31: "But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written,"Let Him Who Boasts, Boast In The Lord". Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
