Hi, WOS! Thank you for your response! The inevitable question must therefore be asked: If God never speaks except to repeat what in the Scriptures (and I commend you for this belief) then what would the value of God speaking be? Instead we have everything He would say right at our fingertips! Why not, therefore, point people to the Word of God, so that you don't have to worry about the source of experiences? I suspect that reading the Bible just isn't as exciting. Which is typical of our world today. We don't even have the discipline to meditate on truths of Scripture, what Christ has done, the cost of our sin, the nature of God, etc. We want to be spoon fed nice predigested sound-bites. We would rather have happy-clappy times, than to listen to careful exposition of the Scriptures. In many of the services I attended, people were reading fortunes cloaked in KJV English, while heavily borrowing from the language of Scripture. (Do they now use NIV English?) Presumably, if the person is wrong, the church must take some extreme action. False prophets were not tolerated in Israel. Per BOWS44 you don't believe in the sufficiency of Scripture. I can better see why that would be a problem for you. Sir, I think I shall continue to commend the Scriptures to everyone. From it are the wellsprings of life. The potential problems of telling people to go sit somewhere until they hear God speak are enormous. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God... not voices, experiences, feelings, etc. The Word is fully sufficient to convict, compell, encourage, and build up. Thank you for taking the time to explain your position. Let us now shift from the mystical back to the topic of this forum: the study of the Word. In Him, Doc |

2 | help | Luke 11:2 | Wild Olive Shoot | 149419 | ||
And my prayer is that God speaks to all, everyone of us, through His Word or otherwise. May He open our eyes, our ears, our minds and hearts so that we may be able to hear Him when He does speak. May He richly bless us all and keep us His. In Christ's name. WOS |

Amen, brother WOS! By the way, out of curiosity, why that particular screen name. It always gets me thinking! :-) |

It's from Romans 11:11-24. Referenced by Paul when describing his vision of a "unified" church. We are the “wild olive shoots”. From the wild, uncultivated tree, we were grafted into the natural tree, because of our faith in Christ. The screen name helps to remind me that it is unity among Christ's faithful that should be sought. We should be united in our love for God, obedience to Christ and while respecting God's law, we look to Christ alone for our salvation. Our ethnic background and social status should be irrelevant as what matters is our faith. We are to be one in Christ. (Galatians 3:28,29) WOS |

Ah! It was the word "shoot" that threw me. I had thought about Romans 11, but there the word is "branch." I kept thinking of the definition of a young growth that comes from a germinating seed. A very good affirmation, WOS! Thank you! In Him, Doc |
