(Continued from last post) The subject you are touching on is known by the Latin phrase "sola scriptura." In order to properly understand the doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture, which is a component of sola scriptura, I would suggest the following passages: 2 Timothy 3:15-17; Isaiah 8:20; Luke 16:29, 31; John 5:39; Acts 15:15, 16; Ephesians 2:20; Romans 1:19-21; Romans 2:14,15; 1 Corinthians 14:6, 9, 11, 12, 24, 28; Psalms 19:1-3; Hebrews 1:1; Proverbs 22:19-21; Romans 15:4; 2 Peter 1:19,20; Colossians 3:16; etc. (Remember that "the infallible rule of interpretation of Scripture is the Scripture itself.") If we believe that God has divinely and providentially preserved His Word, we are not surprised to find the first book to describe the beginning of all things and the last book to describe the ending of all things. So might we assume that there is broader significance to the very last thing that God says to us? "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus." (Revelation 22:18-20) God does, indeed, answer prayers, as you state. But an answer is a response to a request. Hence I continue to affirm that prayer is talking to God, not vice versa. You wrote, "I'll trust God's words over yours or any mans as authority concerning how to identify the nature of the spirits." Yes, I agree. That is very well stated. I am glad that you at least have this aspect of a high regard for Scripture. You wrote, "If we shut ourselves off to God and His speaking to us and our reactions to it, then we invite the unwanted in to our lives. That opens the door far wider for errors to enter in." I am confused by this statement. I never said we should close ourselves off to God. He speaks very clearly and continually through His Word. You wrote, "What is the use of praying for direction and guidance if God in return does not answer? In expecting no answer, you ask to remain in a dark, ungodly world without a guiding light whatsoever." This also confuses me. I never said that God does not answer prayers. God has given us a great guiding light (the Word of God) and the Holy Spirit to help us to comprehend it. Those who walk in submission to the Word will be justified by it, those who walk in rejection of the Word will be condemned by it. Sir, I've said it to others and I will say it to you. My own words are sufficient stumbling blocks. Please do not put words into my mouth... or, in this case, fingers. :-) In Him, Doc |

Doc, I’m referring you to the following site. Including an excerpt in this post. http://www.gotquestions.org/God-still-speak.html Just to clarify, I don’t hold in low esteem the Word of God that He chose to reveal to us. What I do hold in low regard is the opinion that God does not communicate and speak to us outside His word. His very own word proves otherwise. “Finally, yes, God likely does sometimes speak audibly to people. It is highly doubtful, though, that this occurs as often as some people claim it does. Again, even in the Bible, God speaking audibly is the exception, not the ordinary. If anyone claims that God has spoken to them, always compare what is said with what the Bible says. If God were to speak today, His words would be in full agreement with what He has said in the Bible. God does not contradict Himself. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 proclaims, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” © Copyright 2002-2005 Got Questions Ministries. All Rights Reserved. www.gotquestions.org Does God still speak to us today? Don’t hinder others from opening their ears and hearts to God speaking to them. Rather point them in the direction of learning to distinguish the voice of God from other voices that call out to them. Encourage and uplift others. Christ won us the opportunity to approach God on a personal level. The veil was torn. We have the ability to communicate with God and He shows that when we do, He replies. God’s own words clearly show that yes He does communicate to us, through more than just His Word. We just need to be willing to hear. WOS |

Hi, WOS! Thank you for your response! The inevitable question must therefore be asked: If God never speaks except to repeat what in the Scriptures (and I commend you for this belief) then what would the value of God speaking be? Instead we have everything He would say right at our fingertips! Why not, therefore, point people to the Word of God, so that you don't have to worry about the source of experiences? I suspect that reading the Bible just isn't as exciting. Which is typical of our world today. We don't even have the discipline to meditate on truths of Scripture, what Christ has done, the cost of our sin, the nature of God, etc. We want to be spoon fed nice predigested sound-bites. We would rather have happy-clappy times, than to listen to careful exposition of the Scriptures. In many of the services I attended, people were reading fortunes cloaked in KJV English, while heavily borrowing from the language of Scripture. (Do they now use NIV English?) Presumably, if the person is wrong, the church must take some extreme action. False prophets were not tolerated in Israel. Per BOWS44 you don't believe in the sufficiency of Scripture. I can better see why that would be a problem for you. Sir, I think I shall continue to commend the Scriptures to everyone. From it are the wellsprings of life. The potential problems of telling people to go sit somewhere until they hear God speak are enormous. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God... not voices, experiences, feelings, etc. The Word is fully sufficient to convict, compell, encourage, and build up. Thank you for taking the time to explain your position. Let us now shift from the mystical back to the topic of this forum: the study of the Word. In Him, Doc |

A testimony to validate my original suggestion ....my son was feeling as Figoyuen was and I showed him how to meditate on scripture. I instructed him to meditate on the Proverbs because the boy needs wisdom. After a few weeks of these exercises, he now has a greater desire to read scripture (not run from it), his worship is more proactive and meaningful vs distraction and boredom, and his behavior is improving. Now I don't know about anyone else, but in my opinion that is a good thing and shows the value of proper meditation on the word of God. You see...contrary to what Doc wants to believe my words mean, we are also pointing people to scripture and believe that God's answers to every problem and need are found in it. My Pastor daily sends several emails containing nothing but pure scripture. I am not talking about mystical experiences, but spending time with God in His word, learning how it applies to me personally, because He is a personal God. I so much appreciate WOS and his posts. I totally agree with what he has written. Also, what Emmaus wrote was beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I must once again remind the forum of what the Bible says about sqabbling over words. 2 Tim 2:14 Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. God Bless each of you. Bows44 |

Dear Bows44, I'm terribly sorry you felt as though you were squabbling. If something is brought up in the forum it is open for discussion. Jud 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should EARNESTLY contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Act 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the WORD with all readiness of MIND, and SEARCHED the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so. I am very pleased that you have encouraged your son to study the Scriptures! As you have testified, they are living and powerful through the Holy Spirit. Thank you for sharing, sister. In Him, Doc |
