Hi Vintage68, Wasn't God asking Abraham to kill his son? Genesis 22:2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. This seems pretty clear to me. I mean after all did not any other burnt offering that was ever offered result in the death of the thing offered? |

It may have been because Abraham wanted to know how it was that God would bless all the families of the earth through his seed as promised in genesis 12:3. John 8:56 may refer to Abraham's understanding for in offering his son,ABrahM would have had a lively figure of the future offering of the SOn of God as a sacrifice for the sins of the world.
