Subject: Why does Jesus come as a thief? |
Bible Note: Howdy Mark, I'd lke to give you an aletrnative interpretation, if that's OK with you. Obviously Paul is addressing Christians, calling them "beloved". It seems that unbelievers are giving them a hard time by making fun of their claim concerning the Lord's return at the end of the age. Peter reminds them that Jesus is likely to return at an unexpected time, just as a thief comes when folks are least expecting him. The text indicates that this is a "reminder" to the "beloved". I read the chapter through a dozen times and found nothing that would support the idea that the saints were not expecting His return. If that were the case, they would have been fallen from the teaching of Peter. In fact, he commends them saying: You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, Hoppy |
