Bible Note: DarcyA Most of what education has taught me is how much I didn't know. It opened new questions, new horizons, new interests. If we don't want to be taught then why do we think we should teach others. If you feel you learned everything you needed just by reading your Bible then you should not teach anyone nor should anyone listen to you, they should simply go to their Bible. The study of the original languages is because translation is a series of compromises. In our language we use one word to mean many things. In other languages especially Greek and Hebrew they may have 2, 5, 10 and even twenty words that mean slightly different things that would get translated as the same word in English. Without an understanding of the original or training on how to use translation tools a teacher would never be aware of these differences and the true meaning would not conveyed to the students. I hated language training, I hated it in high school, I hated in College it wasn’t until I got into the study of the Bible and of Greek and Hebrew that I understood how little I appreciated all that the languages held in our understanding of the Bible. Did it change the basic message? No! But it did yield a clearer understanding of what that message was. Once again cherish you time of study, don’t seek to show what you know seek to find out what you don’t know. EdB |
