Subject: Predestination question? |
Bible Note: Good Morning Tim, I think it a mistake to isolate v.18 from 17. Afterall, 18 is a summary of that which preceeded it. 17 limits 18 to "those who recieve the abundance of grace". Because of the sin of Adam, all men come into this world condemned. Their lives are characterized by one overarching reality; they are ruled by death. God sent Christ to save "His people" from their sins (Mat 1:21). As you know, it is not sound exegesis to propound or deny any doctrine on the basis of a single verse. There must be a harmony between doctrine and the whole Word of God. Are all men justified by the "one act of righteousness". No! Are all men born condemned by "the transgression of the one"? Yes! Therefore, the answer I offer to your question,... "Romans 5:18 connects the two clauses with the comparative 'even so'. If the extent in the first clause is universal, why then would the extent in the second clause be limited?", ...is that 18 does not stand alone and the modifier is found in 17. Your Brother John |
