Subject: Predestination question? |
Bible Note: Hi Tim, Rom 5:17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. Rom 5:18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. The "...one act of righteousness that resulted in justification of life to all men.." should not be taken as "all men" universely, because it did not result in the justification of ALL men. Rather, ALL men (v17) "who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness". "He makes this favor common to all, because it is propounded to all, and not because it is in reality extended to all; for though Christ suffered for the sins of the whole world, and is offered through God's benignity indiscriminately to all, yet all do not receive him. " (John Calvin, in his commentary on Romans 5) Unlike Brother Scribe, I do not see 5:18 as a fatal flaw that could cast doubt on the exegesis of reformed theologians. Neither do I think that it supports, beyond a doubt, unlimited atonement. God Bless, John |
